LAX returning to normal after panic due to unfounded shooter report

Everything returned back to normal Monday at LAX after the claims of there being a shooter in the building. Police searched and found nothing but a man who was dressed in a Zorro costume with a plastic sword. The man was released when he explained he was in a costume play. People were running through terminals after they heard "gun shots" but it was just loud noises that made all these people panic and run.More than 250 flights were delayed. Recently at New York's John F. Kennedy airport, 8 people heard  gunshots as well and caused a panic. I believe all of these peoples reactions were as expected due to all the recent attacks in different airports around the world.

Research Questions:
Would you run?
Should these airports have stricter policies that restricts people from going to the airport dressed up?
Would you go to the airport dressed up?

  1. I think citizens have the right to choose what to wear. Being "dressed up" is subjective and the government can't make a law on it. However, it I was there, I would serpentine. Running away is the most efficient way to escape a shooter, and if you avoid running in a straight line, it is less likely to get shot.

  2. I would definitely run- better safe than sorry, right? Though I'm sure these false alarms are certainly very disrupting for airport security- it probably costs them a lot of money too, since so many flights get delayed.
I think restricting dress to airports is a violation of personal freedom, so even though it might make a ruckus, it would be unreasonable to prevent people from wearing whatever they want
Personally, I would probably try to refrain from going to an airport dressed up, simply because security takes long enough, I wouldn't want to cause excess suspicion that would delay me even longer. But, I think if you want to go somewhere dressed up, an it's legal and appropriate, then why not?

  3. Yes, I would run because you are less likely to get shot if you are not staying on one palace. I believe that people have the right to dress up however they want at an airport and like Nicole said it is subjective on what being dressed up is. But even though people should be able to where whatever they want, I personally would not. The reason why this happened is because they were trying to keep people safe and if I can help make their job easier I would.

  4. No I would not run because there comes a time in your life where you have to stand up and be a hero even if get shot at least you can be able to say you tried. Honestly i would go to the airport dressed up because if i want to wear a hoodie with sweats and a backpack I should be able to wear that and people are so scared now a days that its not even funny, its sad how life has come to this.

  6. No i would not run, most people with guns are just to afraid to use it and just want to flaunt. I do not believe that the airports should have strict dress policies, that don't allow people to wear what they want. Depending on who is arriving will be the reason to dress up r not, because if you are just getting a friend then there is no reason, or if you have to take that person directly from an airport to a restaurant then maybe.

  7. I'd run if i heard those noises, and look for help. Yes these airports should have stricter rules over costumes being worn. Once you appear in a costume they already start to assume bad things will happen. No I wouldn't go tot his airport dressed up.

  8. I wont not run cause that would make me a bigger target. I think the airport is already strict enough. I might go to the airport dressed up but I'm not sure why I would.

  9. I would run the find some place to hide real quick.I think that all airports should have a body search at every entrance if possible

  11. I would not run because it would make you a easier target and that is afraid. But I would rather wear something that is very comfortable for me. However, it would be understandable if they looked very suspicious.

  12. I understand why people would be scared, but blaming the whole bomb threat on a random guy dressed in a Zorro cosplay is ridiculous. People should be allowed to dress however they want, but maybe they should refrain from holding fake weapons.

  14. I understand why people would be scared. Those who have bad intentions usually hid their identity.

  15. I would definitely try to somehow stay safe if a situation like this happened. Airport attacks have recently become a pretty big fear, so it is completely understandable why people reacted as they did. I do believe you should be allowed to dress how you want at an airport, but any consequences that happen because of your clothes are your fault.

  17. I agree with Nicole W. the government should not restrict people's right to go around dressed up in costumes or even put restrictions on them, yes that may have not been the smartest idea giving the past recent events around the world but you can't take away people's right and freedom to express themselves.

  18. Yes I would run. If I heard any noises resembling gunshots, I would tell a security guard more than likely. There have been so many shootings all around the world so it makes sense for the public to have that type of reaction.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I would say they should have more restrictions on the way you dress when you are going to board on a flight. I would definitely run if i heard a recognizable gunshot. I would not go to the airport dressed up because it is just more of a hassle when you get to security.

  21. I would definitely run. I think any person who heard gun shots would instinctively run away from that, especially in an airport. I think airports should regulate people dressing up in costumes and such. An airport is not the appropriate place to do that. I would never go to the airport dressed up because i would never dress up to go anywhere anyways.

  22. I would run if I heard anything that sounded like gunshots or any sort of danger, especially being in such a public area with the events that have been going on lately. I do believe that being dress-up should not be allowed to a certain extent just to ensure safety for everyone else at the airport.

  23. I would also run if i heard people saying there was a gun shot. I think airport security is actually very strict already. I don't know why this man would have dressed up. I know I sure would not have. Even if he was in a play, why was he at the airport?

  24. With everything going on I do think that airports should not allow people to cover their face or have any fake weapons which people could mistake as real. Lots of times when people panic, people would get injured from just running and being stepped on.

  25. I would never go to the airport dressed up in anything suspicious. I wouldn't want to be seen as a threat, especially with how tight airport security is today. As for the running, I think my personal safety is something that I have to take care of, so I would most likely run away from the gunshots.

  27. As an Arab-American citizen, I have always been told since a young age not to act a certain way or make any jokes about bombs or say anything of the sort. So I agree with Hayden that no one should make an effort to act suspicious and should do the opposite just to make sure things go smoothly as it is a dangerous business.

  28. As for it just going back to normal, seems odd but in truth LAX is a very popular airport, people don't have time to really be shocked or strike the place, so it doesn't surprise me that the angst has been regulated.

  30. I feel that airports should have stricter policies or have ways of coming people down when they do hear phony gun shots. I know that if someone hears "gunshots" everyone would run in a heartbeat, but there should be away to come people down and make sure no one loses themselves. I would not go to the airport dressed up because our society is very sensitive in this day and age so any little suspicious activity would make a big scene, so we need to be careful in what we do now more than ever.

  32. I think instead of reacting to the natural responses from people, the airport should center its focus on how to systematically organize emergencies. The airport is a hub for terrorism because there are many people going in and out, and despite the tight security of American airports, it is still difficult to detect terrorism. I do not think airports should include a dress code, but they should find a way to secure security in a safe way.

  33. Personally I wouldn't be in the airport, but I would run. I think that people need to stop overreacting when it comes to people dressed up, like come on they are probably just having a good time. I would easily go to the airport in my blow up sumo suit.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I would definitely run. Because of all the terrorism and gun violence happening all around the world, people are on high alert. Lately, kid gun toys look so similar to the real things, so I would understand if someone was a bit paranoid if they saw a sword in an airport.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I would run if I saw other people running in fear. I wouldn't want to take any risks that it was a false alarm. I think people should be smart about what they wear to an airport because if they wear a costume or have a fake weapon then people might get scared or suspicious.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I'd either run or try to protect who ever I'm with, and for the dress up part I think there needs to be a limit to how much you can be "dressed" because what if people start going to airports with masks, or fake weapons. Not only would it be hard to identify the person, it can be dangerous.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I would have ran because I am not trying to die and there is always a possibility of a man some how sneaking a gun past security. I believe that there should be stricter policies but not to the point that you cannot dress up at all, as long as the costume does not have a weapon involved and we can see your face then it is all good. I would not dress up because security do not play at the airport and they will shoot me on the spot.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Yeah I think that I would have ran. I'm not the type to play hero. However if one of my family members were in immediate danger my priority would be them first. I think the fact that someone had the nerve to dress up when there are so many terrorist scares is kind of idiotic. I think that they shouldn't have to but I guess because of this they are going to start passing rules. No I would never dress up because it's an airport not a fashion show.

    ReplyDelete
  39. No. I think the best thing to do is to get down as close to the ground as I can and find a cover. By running, I can easily end up on the path of bullets and more likely to get hit. Yes. Because of recent terrorist attacks, the airports have every reason to be concerned about the life and safety of the citizens and the country and implement stricter rules. Airport is certainly not a place to dress up in a costume where one can easily hide a weapon. No. As I said, in my opinion, Airport is not a place to dress up in customer to impersonate others or disguise your true physical appearance. It just makes the security more difficult and out people’s life at risk.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Hiding would probably be better than running. It might sound cowardly but it is effective. There really is no reason to come to an airport dressed up, so no, I would not come to an airport dressed up.

    ReplyDelete
  41. In this situation, I would not panic but stay calm. I would say I wouldn't run but find a hiding spot that is safe. I would never dress up to an airport because it would look suspicious and cause a lot of attention.

  43. Yes, I would run because as Will stated, it's an expected reaction.
Airports shouldn't have restrictions for people not to be able to go to the airport dressed up because its not really causing harm people are just assuming and there are times in the year when kids for example might want to dress up and have fun and that would be an unnecessary restriction. I personally wouldn't go to an airport in a costume due to it not exactly being my style, but just because I wouldn't doesn't mean there aren't people who wouldn't.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I would definitely run since it is better to be safe than sorry. With the shootings happening at schools and public facilities, it is not worth the risk. I believe that the airport does not need to restrict dressing up as long as a person's face is shown and identifiable. As long as the clothes or accessories do not prevent a person from being identified in case of a dangerous incident, then I do not feel as though the airport needs to restrict this personal freedom. I would not go to the airport dressed up because I personally feel that is not practical.

  49. I would run if I felt I was in danger or if I really thought that somebody was acting unusually in the airport. I think its really disappointing that because of the attacks on our country in 2001 that a lot more people are now afraid of flying or airports.

  50. I agree with Hannah, I would run based on what has been happening in previous events I would rather be safe than sorry especially if i felt my life was in danger. I definitely would not come to the airport dressed up because I think it would give people the wrong idea and it would put fear into them that would be unnecessary.

  51. I wonder how much of the terror at both the LAX and JFK airports was caused by the actual suspicion that there was a shooter and how much it may have been due to the domino effect. Since airports are a place of pretty high stress lately, the screaming, running, and panic may have ensued because a few people had reason to be scared then surrounding people caught on. I'm only suspicious of this because there was no real evidence of a shooter at either airport.

  53. I think i would dress rather normal instead of trying to pull off an odd look like that because it may spark confusion in peoples minds and cause them to think you're a terrorist. I also think everyone should dress casually at an airport because people will jump to conclusions and cause false alarms. Personally I put my safety before anything else so I would most definitely run.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I would not dress up at the airport because security at the airport could take my outfit the wrong way and my flight could be put in jeopardy which can lead to unnecessary delays.

  55. I think you gotta run in that situation because you don't want your life to go boom boom per se. With the rise of school shooters its only natural that our airports are next--who knows the dangers of the next 7/11 might happen and you gotta get the hell outta there. I mean conformity is what is going to keep you safe here. There is no harm in running with the crowd if there isn't a shooter, but if there is than hopefully you can get crowd-covered and increase chances of survival.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I would most likely run because why should I not? I wouldn't take any chances of waiting around and checking if the shooting is real.I don't think it really matters what people wear to the airport, and everyone should wear whatever they want. Depending on the situation, I would dress up when I'm going to the airport.

  63. I would also run because I would have no idea whether it was fake or real and I would care about my safety first. Yes I believe the airports should have stricter laws to dress up because of the recent terrorism that is going on we have to be aware and cautious of our surroundings and take everything as serious as possible. I would not go to the airport dressed in a costume because it will scare people away like it did in this situation and there is no need to scare people for no reason.

  64. I would just hide rather than running because if you run it will just cause more mayhem and plus I think that with all the things going on it did scare people so some should just take it easy on that

  65. I think if it were me, I would have ran because I think it's better than just sitting in a place where a shooter could probably get you. The airports probably shouldn't let people pass security dressed up. I wouldn't go to an airport dressed up.

  66. Without a doubt my initial reaction would be to run and do whatever I needed to do in order to stay safe during a situation like this. It is understandable why people reacted as they did. Everyone should be allowed to dress how you want at an airport. However, one must be aware of the consequences that may come from their decision.
