Hillary Clinton while being the first lady described a vast right winged conspiracy, that are very wealth and are trying to train young conservatives. Within the last 20 years Clinton has changed her vocabulary, and now refers to this group as a basket of deplorables. This was an attack on approximately 22% of the electorate, which is risky but she wants to separate herself from Trumps racism. The article describes Trumps campaign as one of the most racist ones since George Wallace in 1968. Some examples of Trumps racism is seen when states, "Mexicans are rapists" as well as advocated violence against African Americans, and made wide spread anti Muslim comments.
1. Is Hillary trying to hide her own racism, underneath Trump's prominent racism?
2. Was "basket of deplorables" a good term used by Hillary?
3. How do you think voters of different races will react to these candidates?
Maybe Clinton is racist, maybe she isn't. She definitely isn't as racist as Trump, but that's definitely not saying much. However as long as her policy doesn't reflect her racism, then how does it really affect us? I definitely think the Basket of Deplorables was a mistake. She should be trying to garner more votes, not offend people. Especially since if she gets elected, she still has to represent these so-called Deplorables. I think Clinton has most POC voting for her, because they realize that Trump is racist, and that he will not stand up for the POC in our country. Trump's popularity is grounded in popularity among white voters

ReplyDeleteClinton is not as racist as Trump, and if she is then she doesn't publicize it. I think Clinton should focus on getting votes and making peace with the future voters.
ReplyDeleteif Hillary or Trump want to be the next president they should really understand the diversity of the united states as a nation and that will help all of us as a country .
ReplyDeleteHillary clinton is not racist, not as much as trump anyway, but i don't think the word choices that she used were not the best she could of, it sounds like she's trying to offend someone, but isn't at the same time. I think different races will just try to vote for the least racist president.
ReplyDeleteHillary Clinton obviously made a mistake by claiming half of Trump's voters are part of a "basket of deplorables." Although she knew she was not going to get those voters, she's hurting her own campaign by saying reckless things like this.
ReplyDeleteI believe that Hillary Clinton does have some racist beliefs and is expressing that in her campaign. However, due to Trump's extreme racism, many americans are ignoring the slight racism in Clinton's statements. Using the statement "basket of deplorables" was not a good choice of Clinton's. Despite the perception that she is not racist, she cannot risk loosing any other groups by racist comments. Using this statement will make many groups of voters loose their trust in Clinton and not vote for her.
ReplyDeleteI think that Hillary is trying to hide her racism so that she can rack up more supporters. Voters of different races will support her because she hides her personal opinion of them.
ReplyDeleteI think that Clinton definitely made a mistake with her "basket of deplorables" comment and that it might have a negative effect, especially considering that she would be representative of all people in America if she won; it may cause some resent and even more tension.
ReplyDeleteIf Hillary really meant what she said, I believe that Hillary might be just as racist as Trump, but unlike Trump, Hillary carefully chooses her words as seen in the phrase "basket of deplorables." Another way to interpret why she made the decision to offend Trump supporters is that Hillary is expressing her confidence in winning the election and that she is only doing it to get the support of non-Republicans.
ReplyDeleteThough Hillary could possibly have her own racist views, using the term, "basket of deplorables" will most likely not help her cause very much as she is insulting the support she may rely on in the future. I feel like voters may not like necessarily either of these candidates at this point because both candidates have quite interesting characters.

ReplyDeleteClinton is guilty of making some racist comments, but compared to Trump, she is not bad at all. The phrase "basket of deplorables" was not a very smart move for their campaign, but this presidential campaign is unlike any others. There is not one unanimous candidate and all of them have a large group of opposers. Clinton can get away with saying these things because Trump is way worse.
ReplyDeleteI think Clinton absolutely has some form of racist beliefs. She just isn't as vocal about it as Trump because she is trying to appeal to as wide an audience as she can. The term "basket of deplorables" is a personal attack, which I believe was unwarranted.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Oscar that Hillary does have some racist views but does not express them. When she said basket of deplorables was a bad mistake because she was insulting a large amount of voters. And if she wins she would still haft to represent the people she called deplorables.
ReplyDeleteI dont think Hillary is trying to hide her own racism, underneath Trumps prodominent racism. I think in these days, everyone has to be politically correct in order to survive in todays day. I think voters of different races will react differently as the election gets closer due to what both of the candidates will say. Thus far, I believe that Trump is still in the hot seat for all of the obvious racist comments he said, therefore I think Clinton should be okay.
ReplyDeleteHilary simply stating that Donald Trump's campaign is very racist does not mean she is necessarily hiding her own racism, but she is simply highlighting Donald Trump's racism as being very extreme since George Wallace. I think that voters of different race would consider the racism towards others and how it may affect their association with those races that are discriminated against.
ReplyDeleteI do agree with the previously stated comments that Hillary is racist, but not as racist as Trump. Yes what she stated was something that would've been better if not said, but I feel Hillary feels comfortable about her position in the polls and is almost becoming a little more vocal in her approach.
ReplyDeleteBefore I comment on the political race, I would like to mention a quote from the musical "Avenue Q": "Everyone's a little bit racist!" Even if Clinton IS racist, it doesn't discredit her past actions. Was "basket of deplorables" a reckless judgement? Yes. But nobody's perfect. Voters should be focusing on what a presidential candidate will do with their imperfections (i.e. cover them up, strive to do better, embrace them)instead of their faults alone.

ReplyDeleteI believe Clinton does have some racist views, but she does not go around expressing them at the level that Trump does. It is something that should be said. It is a problem. The way that he just lets things slip from his mouth is something that should be noted. However, using the "basket of deplorables" will not help her in the long run. That is some support she may need in the future, and something like that could easily strip her of that support.
ReplyDeleteI haven't really observed Hillary enough to determine if she is racist or not. The term "Basket of Deplorable's" was not the best term to use, however, like the article says, in this century it is better than calling someone a racist. I think that voters of other races will most likely disagree with Trump and consider Hillary as a better candidate only because she does not publicly express her racist views.

ReplyDeleteCan Hillary say anything that will make her seem more racist than Trump? The 22% that she is offending probably wasn't going to vote for her anyway, so I don't think it will affect her in the election.
ReplyDeleteI think that Hillary's racism is definitely real, she has been seen on multiple occasions giving "middle fingers" to Mexicans and Hispanols. I have even heard that she once nodded her head to a Trump debate while he was on the topic of building a wall.
ReplyDeleteThat was a joke, Hillary is trying to go for the direct antonym of Trump. Looking to appeal to all that are disgusted by him, while playing up her own agenda, without a doubt she is playing the campaign well and will likely win the presidency due to her cunning and trickery.
ReplyDeletei believe that she is some hat racist but in a way that people of do not understand. She keeps it very subtle. That is a good term to describe trump supporters. Everyone has their own opinions.
ReplyDeleteI do not know for sure if Clinton herself is racist, but I do know that it would affect her campaign is she went public with it. Since a majority of her voters are minorities, this would be very bad for her. If it turns out that Hillary is racist, as long as it does not get in the way of her policy, then it should not affect us too much.
ReplyDeleteI believe that Hillary isn't racist, however it was probably not the best thing to say. But at the same time, the 22% of the people she offended were most likely not going to vote for her anyways as others have stated, therefore it wasn't all that risky to say.
ReplyDeleteI am not 100% sure whether or not Clinton is a racist, but in her saying this causes me to lean more towards the side of thinking she is. I agree with previous students that the 22% of people that she offended probably was not going to change the outcome of their votes. They were probably not going to vote for Hillary in the first place.

ReplyDeleteHillary may be trying to hide her racism but Trump is definitely more racist than she is, which is the problem. Most of the voters will see Trump being worse than Hillary and will think that he is the more racist one despite some racism from Hillary.

ReplyDeleteAlthough Clinton expressed some racist beliefs in her campaign, it does not compare to Trump's extreme racism. The statement "basket of deplorables" was a poor choice on Clinton's behalf. This statement could risk her losing trust or and support from voters.
