Trump Nominates Jeff Sessions for Attorney General

Donald Trump, right, with US Senator Jeff Sessions at Trump Tower, New York, 7 October 2016

Trump has nominated the conservative Jeff Sessions as the Attorney General of the US. Sessions was once nominated to be a federal judge in 1986 ,but the Senate didn't confirm him as a federal judge due to alleged racist remarks. Trump says that Sessions has one of the best legal minds in the world and is respected by many legal scholars. Sessions doesn't want a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants and wants the wall between the border of the US and Mexico. Some Democratic senators are concerned with how Sessions will act with the Civil Rights Division at the Department of Justice.

Discussion Questions:
Do you think it is okay for someone who allegedly made racist comments be nominated as Attorney General of the US?

How will Sessions' Conservative mindset affect immigration to the US?

What laws do you think Sessions will see as the most important to enforce?

  2. I do not believe that someone who has publicly made racist comment should be given the power of Attorney General of the US.

  3. I'm not okay with a president as racist as Trump, so I'm not okay either with a racist attorney general either. His mindset is fitting with Trump's, especially since he agrees with the wall idea and not giving undocumented immigrants the path to citizenship. It seems that he'll enforce these ones the most.

  4. With Sessions becoming Attorney General, and his stance on immigration, it's safe to say that immigration will become a much stricter process than it currently is. I don't think having a leader who made racist remarks is okay, but I believe that people should look at his policies and stances before making any premature judgments.

  5. I agree with Haley that if trump hires more people like sessions than i fear there will be less justice for the minority groups that need it the most.

  6. I do not think it is okay for someone who has made racist comments to be nominated as Attorney of the US. He has a similar mindset to Trump because they agree on the same topics.

Although having said racist remarks i believe that it will be okay. With Trump hiring more people that have been racist in the past, I believe that it will become hard for the minorities.

  8. In my opinion, "racist remarks" aren't out of the ordinary, so they're no big deal. However, the racist attitude that comes with it is much more significant. I'm scared for minorities that will be submitted to not only legal prejudice from the federal government, but harsh judgement by the general public as well.

  10. I feel like if he's been proven to be racist then he doesn't qualify to be the Attorney General. Its most likely that immigration will become a harder process.

  11. I think everyone makes so kind of racist remarks but he has went to far with these remarks, so no I don't think he should be nominated as Attorney General of the US. Enforce that he doesn't make big decisions for his own motivates.

  13. I believe that it is not okay to run for president if you have made racist remarks let alone be the US attorney general. It will affect immigration in the US because that will affect how people see immigrants here on out due to political influences.

  14. I think that it is definitely not okay for the US attorney general (or president) to be in power if they have those types of racist remarks, it will definitely make immigration harder and the path to citizenship for those that need it harder as well.

  15. I don't think it is okay for the US attorney general to have made racist remarks, and I believe that Sessions has ties to the KKK, and obviously that is not okay. Because of Sessions's conservative mindset becoming a citizen will be harder and it may lead to more deportations.

  16. I don't think it's okay because he is racist. I think it may cause some problems in the future. I think the senate's conservative mindset might effect immigration because they are very closed minded.

  17. He should not become the attorney general. With racism comes bias, and that is definitely a factor when it comes to being an attorney. Bias can really affect how he will do his job.

  18. It is not justified for the US attorney general to make racist comments. There are ties to the KKK, which is an extremely racist group and not ok. The mindset of Sessions's conservative will make it harder for immigration

  19. I believe most everyone saw this coming. Trump being elected has opened the door for racism to become more and more involved in government decision and policy. if a candidate is endorsed by the KKK, they should not be anywhere near a position of power.

  20. With a racist attorney general, there will be biased opinions included within making decisions which is a bit hypocritical considering Trump made racist remarks about a Latino judge being unfair and biased because of his race.

  21. I feel with past evidence against him, Session's will not help immigrants in our country and endanger the lifestyle of many people. Trump's decisions continue to hurt people in America and I'm scared for how his presidency will affect our country.

  22. I believe that Sessions shares a lot of the same ideas and beliefs as Trump and I think that they will put their main focus on the same things while in office

  23. I personally do not find it to be okay for someone who allegedly made racist comments be nominated as Attorney General of the US because there are many parts of the US that are melting pots, specifically California, thus many different people come from all around and for a judge to be racist to different sorts of people is scary and just not okay.

  24. I think that no matter how racist the attorney general is as long as immigrants arrive in America though legal means they are completely protected by equality laws so having a racist attorney general should logicly not affect immigration negativly

  25. I don't think it's okay for him to make racist remarks, however, I understand why Trump chose him since they both have similar racist mindsets. I think they need to realize that especially now, all eyes are on them and they need to be more respectful

  26. I think Trump chose this man because they are similar. His racist remarks show the type of person he is and the type of Attorney General will be. I don't think he will help immigrants in our country.

  27. I don't think that it is okay for someone who allegedly made racist comments to be nominated for Attorney General of the US. I think that his mindset would be that he would set strict rules on immigrants and as a result, there could be a lot of immigrants deported. I think that he will see it is important to enforce the laws about immigration.

  28. No I do not think it is okay for a person who made racist remarks be named attorney general. However just like Trump he will be criticized for his racist remarks but if he is able to prove himself then the racist remarks that he made might be forgotten. The laws that Sessions might feel are most important to enforce might probably be building a wall and not letting illegal immigrants come into the United States. Jim and Trump will make it a top priority because they have the same mindset in terms of building a wall and not letting illegal immigrants immigrate into the United States.

  29. Someone who has made racist comments should be able to be named attorney general. I think that Sessions conservative mindset would affect US immigration by decreasing it, and may also cause an increase in deportation.

  30. I do not believe that it is okay for someone who has been blatantly racist, or even made suggestive comments suggesting racism should be named attorney general. However, this is a very similar situation to the recent presidential election. I believe that he would set harsh rules on immigrants. I also think that the United States as a whole is going to become a lot more violent and hostile. I believe that he will think it is important to be strict towards minorities and immigrants.

  31. I agree with the comments in the sense that, he is a man who is an obvious racist and one who has obvious bias, and the decisions that he will be making will truly impact us greatly.

  32. This comes to me as no surprise, a racist electing a racist. I think with the result of the election we have found that we can't really assume anything. Everything is up in the air right now.

  33. It isn't okay to elect a racist as attorney general, but we can't do anything about it if a racist president was elected. It will change everything about immigration now that we have a racist attorney general; it will also impact many lives throughout our country.

  35. I think everyone has a past they wish to change but if it was really recent than no I don't believe he should become Attorney General, at the same time we can't really do anything about racism it is just what they believe.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I think that his conservative mindset will create a lot of stricter laws and regulations in terms of immigration. I feel like it should be somewhat scary to people that the appointed attorney general is someone with ties to the KKK, and therefore should not have been put into that position.

  37. It does not make sense to even consider someone a potential reperesntative for legal proceedings and advice for the government he has made racist remarks.
However, taking to account the result of our presidential election, opting for Sessions would not surprising -despite his injustice towards immigrants.
