Regarding Trump's selections for his cabinet consisted of white, male individuals. However, Donald Trump has introduced the first two women in his administration. Trump selected South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley as the US's envoy to the United Nations and Betsy DeVos as the education secretary. Both women were former critics of Trump, naming him an "interloper," and Haley admitted she was "not a fan." Although Haley has been viewed as an influential political figure, many of her stances were not known at the time. Upon further research, she was described to be a "political heavyweight," and this assured diplomats that Trump is taking the UN seriously with his choice of ambassador. There is a relief among diplomats since Trump did not elect someone who would be perceived to be a person to downgrade the job of UN ambassador. Trump highly speaks of Haley, referring to her as "a proven deal maker... [and] a great leader representing us on the world stage." Haley is a woman representing a minority who supported Marco Rubio during the primaries and then Ted Cruz, and she attacked Trump's proposal to ban Muslim immigrants. Trump had called her views on immigration "weak" and an "embarrassment." Trump's election of DeVos was also believed to bring in a strong leader in education, despite the fact she supported Trump's rivals.
Discussion Questions:
1. Do you think Trump's election of women, one being a minority, is representative of change in his previously outspoken remarks?
2. Why do you think Trump elected people who have previously disagreed with his political views, and how will this affect his public image?
3. Why do you think Haley and DeVos agreed to join the cabinet despite somewhat conflicting views, and how do you think they will influence the nation?
I think Trump is a racist misogynist, homophobic, islamphobic, pansexual hater, white supremacist, and a White Lives Matter supporter. With that being said hiring these women is a classic representation of him being a fraud. We gotta make the people feel like Trump is open-minded and liberal when he's actually a grumpy old man. It's all about image. We won't hear about these people in like 2 months, so basically the short term gain of making him appear to be moderate--it's all a facade per se. Get out of the cave kyle, get out of the cave.
ReplyDeleteI think Trump is trying to fix everything he said by electing women to be in office with him, but what was said is said and there is turning back he already created a monster of himself and a lot of hate is out. This is for the the people who supported Trump to see how much of a fraud he is and how he is doing this to seem like a perfect image which he is not.
ReplyDeleteI think that Trump's willingness to select women who previously supported his rivals demonstrates that he has chosen them based on their abilities, leadership, and experience.
ReplyDeleteI believe Trump is trying to win everyone with picking women out. He might be changing slowly but he is starting to make changes. Trump elected people who have disagreed with his political views to show people can change their opinion on him. I hope they influence the nation in a positive way.
ReplyDeleteI feel like he's trying to prove to people that he isn't some of the things that people say about him, for example, misogynistic. Trump's supporters are going to use this as an example of how he isn't what "crazy liberals" are saying, and they are going to try to make his image look better.
ReplyDeleteI think that trump elected these women because of their abilities and their political views. He seems to be moving away from his hatred towards women rights, but I also feel like he is doing this to try and appeal to more people, as he is a widely hated president
ReplyDeleteI definitely see him electing a minority as a cabinet member a step forward from the outrageous remarks he made during his campaign. It also reflects that he has some respect for women.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Mikey on this being a move made by Trump to make a minority a member of the cabinet, to come back from prior statements.
ReplyDeleteI believe that Trump is running low on options that still support him so he is resorting to good people who may have disagreed with him in the past, he is also desperately trying to win support
ReplyDeleteThere comes a time when Trump was campaigning and now is the time in which he has been elected. Trump has seen what he needs in his offices to fill for his lack of experience in other facets of government, plain and simple. His hiring of these two women will not hurt his image at all, but is simply a move of him realizing the value of their skills and putting aside political differences so he can set up his office for success.
ReplyDeleteTrump appointing a women to be a part of his cabinet suggests that his words do not completely dictate his actions. Though she was against him, his appointment of her suggests that he may be willing to listen to other views. Overall, I feel that we will just have to wait and see what happens.
ReplyDeleteI feel like trump is doing this just to cover up his remarks on Hilary trying to make it seem that he cares. I think these women agreed to join because they'll probably make bank and have an easy life.
ReplyDeleteI think Trump appointing two women will not change his image what so ever, he is only trying to fulfill the departments in his cabinet that he lacks skill in. He is trying to set up the office for success.
ReplyDeletePerhaps Trump has chosen these women to be part of his administration because they were once his rivals who represented the views of many people who didn't get to vote and choose the people they want to be in office. By having them be part of his administration then perhaps more people would be less angry or disappointed that the people they supported did not go into office.
ReplyDeleteYes, Trump appointed women to important positions, and one of them is a minority, but let's not jump to conclusions here. Trump may have appointed them as a good intention, but we don't know whether Trump made a good decision or not. We never know what people will do once they go into politics.
ReplyDeleteI think Haley and DeVos agreed to joined the cabinet despite somewhat conflicting views, is because they are looking towards their futures, and to show the future leaders who come in that they can work with just about anything.
ReplyDeleteI think that conflicting views in Trumps cabinet are good because Trump will then be able to see both sides of an argument when making a decision for the nation. I think that most of what Trump did during the election was for shock value and he will probably surprise most people with what he does in office. This is just the first sign of that.
ReplyDeleteI think this is a good idea. Even though some of the people may be conflicting, this would help Trump make an informed decision because he is aware of both sides arguments
ReplyDeleteI think that this is a good idea for Trump to do this. It will give him a look at both sides since he is electing people who haven't been in complete favor of his political views.
ReplyDeleteI think Trump made this move in order to move forward and try to get people to forget all the horrible remarks he made before and trying to make a good impression
ReplyDeleteDonald trump may have done this to come to equal terms with some citizens or he might want to even balance out his cabinet. He may want to overcome those wrongs that people are going against and fix them?
ReplyDeleteI'm curious to know how much of a part Trump really has in making these appointments. I don't know much about Haley in terms of foreign issues, but from a quick internet search I'm already having my doubts about her. There's evidence of her supporting Trump's stance on climate change being a non-issue...yikes. I mean, this is the UN we're talking about, and the US has a lot of influence on international policy. Without the US actively trying to combat climate change, certain parts the international community may be less inclined to try to do anything. She also is pro-life, which opposes the UN ideal that women have sexual and reproductive rights. But those are worries that mainly apply to liberals. But how's this for universally concerning: she has no education in foreign policy. Why is she the UN ambassador??? Sure it's great that Trump is trying to diversify, but that's certainly not what should be the major consideration for a role. Oh well, I guess this just adds to the list of people in government roles completely and totally unqualified *cough trump* for their jobs
ReplyDeleteI think he may have appointed women in order to try and change people's views on him towards minorities, but I don't know if it really changes things for them. I think it confuses a lot of people, because he has said so many things against women and it is confusing that they have had conflicting views in the past. It's hard to get a clear picture of what his motives are.
ReplyDeleteI do believe that Trumps appointments of women for the Cabinet position is to show other people that he isn't a women hater as many people view him as. I believe he appointed people who have disagreed with his views in order to later prove to them that his views are correct or even that Trump wants to hear a different perspective (one that he did not think of). I believe Haley and DeVos agreed to be part of Trumps Cabinet because they may think that Trump isn't as bad of a women hater as many people think of him and them agreeing to these positions show the world that Trump is changing his views on women.
ReplyDeleteI think Trump is just using these women has his trophies. I think the reason he brought on two women with conflicting views was because he probably wanted to understand both sides of the argument concerning an issue
ReplyDeleteI think it's a good think trump put two women in his cabinet because it shows diversity, however I do think that will make up for his comments made towards women but it is a step in the right direction.I think to chose women who have different believes than him so he can show support for thoes who don't agree with his believe. I think she agreed so she can help trump change his views on certain topics.
