Seeing Trump and Clinton are constantly attacking each other, Trump saying Clinton is a liar and going to start WWIII, and Clinton poking at Trump for his attitude towards women and also says he is going to start a war too. However, the nationally known chain, Starbucks, decided to switch their cups from their regular white cups to green as a symbol of unity for the nation during the election. The Starbucks's CEO stated, "During a divisive time in our county, Starbucks wanted to create a symbol of unity as a reminder of our shared values, and the need to be good to each other." However, many Starbucks lovers have been outraged over the green cups because this time of year the cups are normally red to symbolize the holidays, but since then Starbucks has stated the red cups will come back later this month after the election.
Discussion Questions:
1) Do you think the green cups will help the country unite the nation behind the winning candidate in next week's election?
2) Was this a creative idea that actually worked?
3) Do you think it was fair for Starbucks lovers to get upset over the green cups?
Personally I believe that it is nice that Starbucks is trying to remind people that we are still all Americans, however I don't see a simple cup color change as something to be upset about and I do not believe that it will do more than serve as a reminder that we are all Americans.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Xavier that the green cups will act as a good reminder to the nation that we should remain united and not lose hope in our nation's democracy. I feel that coffee lover's who want the red cups back are not really seeing the green for what it represents. I don't think they should've gotten mad because of a decision to unify their country.
ReplyDeleteI also feel that this is a nice motion towards all of us becoming united again as we once were. I feel like in this time, we need these little gestures to remind us of who we are and no matter what happens we will still be united.
ReplyDeleteI feel it was a nice mature idea that startbucks are having their cups green because it will remind Americans what are true nations values are. I Think this might impact candidate because they will start thinking which leader has and represents the United States values. I don't think people should be upset with Starbucks because they are not having red cups right now, They need to see the bigger picture which is to make sure people vote for the candidate that represents and respect our nations values.
ReplyDeleteI believe this is a good evidence that everyone is probably more mature then the way Hillary and Trump are acting during this election. The Starbucks cup is a good reminder that the US is not about separation but about unity.
ReplyDeleteI think cups will not really make an impact on anyone at all. It is also stupid for people to get mad about the color of the cup they are drinking from.
ReplyDeleteI think Starbucks has a lot of power over citizens because of their popularity and it's smart to implement the unity in the green cups. This is not the first time Starbucks has become political. Before, they wrote on every single cup trying to get democrats and republicans to stop fighting. I don't think a business is obligated to stay neutral in politics, no matter how big they are. People shouldn't be upset about Starbucks using their power to influence voters.
ReplyDeleteI think it is a creative idea, but I don't think it will do that much to help because people feel very strong about politics. Also, it wasn't fair for Starbucks lovers to get upset because it's just a color.
ReplyDeleteI think it is a creative idea, but I don't think it will do that much to help because people feel very strong about politics. Also, it wasn't fair for Starbucks lovers to get upset because it's just a color.
ReplyDeleteI think starbucks main purpose changing the color was to signify that star bucks is not taking a side within the election. Cups being red would probably cause controversy within the nation.
ReplyDeleteI truly believe that this cup idea will do absolutely nothing. I also find it very stupid that people get mad over something as a color of a cup. Just goes to show you how mature people are.
ReplyDeleteI don't think anyone should be offended by a color of a cup in general, however the purpose of the green colored cup makes sense and it has a positive influence to others. The outrage by the Starbucks lovers makes no sense since the color will go back to red very soon anyways.
ReplyDeleteI think the green cups will just show the country that even corporations support working together. I believe the idea worked because this election especially is very important, so the country showing interest is good. I think it is so stupid that Starbucks customers got upset over the green cups especially because of what they're standing for.
ReplyDeleteI think that the green cups are a good symbol and reminder that we are all Americans and must stick together but I do not think it will help much, I think that it is a really good move from Starbucks though. I do not think that it is fair for the Starbucks customers to get upset over the cup color at all and although it is a creative idea I feel that not many will remember it and it may not really unite us
ReplyDeleteAlthough it had intentions of reminding people of unity, changing the color of a coffee cup will not make drastic changes in someone's outlook towards this election. To be honest I just thought the green cup was for Christmas so it didn't work. Finally, Starbuck's customers have no good excuse for getting upset over the color of a cup - this happened last year around Christmas as well when they stopped decorating the Christmas cups to respect other holidays. All in all, it's just a coffee cup and if the color affects someone to the point of outrage they need to grow up. The color will be going back to red either way so there is no reason to be upset over this. The fact that this is even in the headlines reveals how immature our country can be.
ReplyDeleteI believe that this Starbucks green cup unity statement will not be effective because I do not believe that people know the real reason behind the green cups. I did not even know the meaning of the cups until I read this article. I believed it was just to start off the holiday season. It is creative and I like the idea but in the end it is just a cup.I think it was unnecessary for them to get upset because it is literally only a cup.
ReplyDeleteThe cup turning from white to green will ultimately do nothing because it is just a coffee cup unless you devote your life to starbucks and follow everything they do this change will do nothing. Honestly I think it is idiotic for people to be frustrated that a simple coffee cup has been changed from red to green.
ReplyDeleteI think that this action is a good idea and while it won't make any massive change to the outcome but will send out a positive message to those who know about it.
ReplyDeleteThe cup won't make a huge change. They want to display unity through their cups which is nice but most people are just going to drink their coffee and throw the cup out.
ReplyDeleteI feel that changing the color of a cup wont change much in our country, and for the starbucks fans I think they should relax.

ReplyDeleteI also believe that changing the color and the size of the cup will not do much for our country.
ReplyDeleteI think it's a unique and creative idea to raise awareness about the importance of unity between our country. Although it may not be effective, it brings the attention of the division between our country to the people to possibly change our ways.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion I believe that this was a very creative idea to show the importance of unity between everyone, but I also believe that doing this wont change much because its just changing the color of a cup not something actually very effective. Also I think that starbucks lovers should relax and not worry over a color of a cup instead they should worry more about who will become president and what will become of our country.
ReplyDeleteI don't think the green cups will help the country unite the nation behind the winning candidate in next weeks election but I do think that it was a creative idea, and I think it's taking action on what everyone wants action to be taken on. I dont think it was right for starbucks lovers to get upset because no matter what side youre on whats happening between Trump and Clinton just isnt right.
ReplyDeleteNot only are the green cups totally hideous, but there is no point to it. You cannot unite people through a piece of plastic, that is unrealistic. In fact, the election has shown us how divided we are, and what we should be doing is addressing these differences to create a compromise through speech, not an ugly cup. People who are outraged about this needs to have their priorities straightened, like seriously. it is a cup. This election is much far worse and they should be outraged by THIS election.
ReplyDeleteI feel like the change of cup color will have no affect to uniting the nation. Starbucks is just doing this to get publicity.
ReplyDeleteI feel like the change of cup color will have no affect to uniting the nation. Starbucks is just doing this to get publicity.
ReplyDeleteChanging the color of the cups to incite unity is kind naive to be honest. It does have a good message behind it, but I think hardly anyone would know the meaning of the change of color if not told. Changing the color of a cup is not going to unify anyone
ReplyDeleteI don't think that by just changing the color of the cups, it will do much. Also, many people may not know the reason behind why the cups were changed, so it may not have an affect on how people think. I think this is a creative idea, but unfortunately, do not think much change will happen or it will have a big affect on the people. I don't think it was fair for Starbucks lovers to get upset over the color of the cup because the color of a cup should not matter, as it would have no difference on anybody's daily life.
ReplyDeleteI strongly think that because sawbucks changed the cups to green, it will cause an effect of unity among people in the country. It was a nice idea and thought of starbucks, but this issue regarding unity has to have a strong resolution (if there is one). Starbucks tried something not for promotion but for peace and it is valid but like I had mentioned before it does not really help.
ReplyDeleteI don't think that a new Starbucks cup will unite the nation at all. It is a nice gesture, but not enough to change the way that people are. I personally believe those Starbucks users who have been upset because of green cups are ridiculous.
ReplyDeleteI think most people feel indifferent towards the color of their starbuck cups so it's definitely not going to help unify the country. I think starbucks choosing the color green was a bit random; choosing a red, white, and blue color scheme would have probably made more sense.
ReplyDeleteI think most people feel indifferent towards the color of their starbuck cups so it's definitely not going to help unify the country. I think starbucks choosing the color green was a bit random; choosing a red, white, and blue color scheme would have probably made more sense.
ReplyDeleteAlthough Starbucks has a good idea with trying to unify the country, I highly doubt that these cups would have changed anyone's minds in the long run.
ReplyDeleteAlthough this is a good idea, there is no way that the changing of a color on a cup will help unify our country. Throughout this election, our countries true, interesting and disturbing, colors have come out, leading to the separation. I also believe that Starbucks customers who are upset due to the color change should calm down.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Shaye, Although the green cups have great intentions behind them, I don't see them being the solution to unifying the nation during the election. And no, the Starbucks customers have no reason to be outraged over a cup, especially when they're going to come back in a couple weeks. It's just a cup.
ReplyDeleteThe use of green cups to symbolize what America means as a unity is a great idea to remind Americans what we stand for. It should not be sparking controversy among coffee lovers for reminding unity and the fact of coming together is more important than red cups symbolizing holidays.
ReplyDeleteI think green cups are a cool idea to show unity, however I don't think it is effective in any way. Coffee lovers should get over themselves and the fact that it's just a cup you're going to throw away anyways.
ReplyDeleteThe greens cups are a nice idea and has good intentions, but I do not think that it is something that is going to help unite the country. The Starbucks lovers that are getting upset over the green cups are entitled to their opinion and there are always going to be people that are not happy just like how last year people were upset that the holiday cups did not have enough christmas stuff on them.
ReplyDeleteAlthough the cups have changed it doesn't mean that they could actually help others. I believe that the cup change only works because of how starbucks is usually populated and people would go there more than other coffee shops.
ReplyDeleteI think the green cup idea was creative and shows that we do need to understand that there are different opinions, and we do need to be unified as a country.
ReplyDeleteI think that the green cup will do nothing, its just a cup color that's not going to just change the world. Its literally just a cup color should not be a big deal.
ReplyDeleteI think changing the color of Starbucks cups is a positive and important statement to make. Today we are so focused on the election (with good reason) but we sometimes we get so wrapped up in the divisions of political parties that we forget our similarities and need to help each other. As such a massive, multinational company, Starbucks has the power to make this message heard by millions who buy their products. With an open mind and receptiveness to messages in our communities, I think the message behind the green cups can have a small but noticeable impact on people's attitudes.
ReplyDeleteI feel like changing the color of the cups are doing nothing other than changing the design. I get the point it is trying to make, but I don't see the difference it will make in the country
ReplyDeleteIn terms of a coffee cup, Starbucks does not have an ounce of care for unity in the american people. The very fact that we are talking about a petty "cup color change" is exactly what they wanted to happen: for people to talk, argue and discuss how their spiced latte cup changed to a green color, disrupting their whole life. They are getting their name out, and do not care for unity by any means. It's a cup of coffee that people care more how it looks in their hands rather than what it means.
ReplyDeleteI believe that these green cups will not help the nation unite in anyway. On the other hand i do believe that the idea it self is a good one for marketing. I do believe that it is fair for Starbucks lover to get offended over this since they are the target market for purchasing these cups.
ReplyDeleteIt is creative thinking, but I don't think that it will just change peoples ways to vote an all. They should have hosted a big event or something like that like Chance the rapper he hosted a free concert for the youth to vote for this election
ReplyDeleteI agree with Starbucks attempting to bring back the unity within our country. It was definitely a creative idea that I think worked because it forces people to realize what our country has become.
ReplyDeleteI definitely believe that the message behind the cup of drawing a whole community with one line but I don't believe it will change anyones vote
ReplyDeleteI don't believe that these cups have the power to change how people vote, but it is a nice message behind it. Although the message is there, it may not influence as much.
ReplyDeleteWith an open mind and receptiveness to messages in our communities, I think the message behind the green cups can have a small but noticeable impact on people's attitudes. I don't think it was fair for Starbucks lovers to get upset over the color of the cup because the color of a cup should not matter, as it would have no difference on anybody's daily life.
ReplyDeleteI think the starbucks cups were a good idea and effort in uniting the separated political parties but it was unsuccessful. More people were upset about the fact that the red holiday cups didn't come out so they just focused on that instead of focusing on the fact that our country needs to come together.
ReplyDeleteI don't think the green cups are impactful enough to remind citizens that we are united, but it does have some sort of small symbolism to it. This idea was very creative, but I feel that most people would see it as just a green cup and nothing more. I don't understand why starbucks lovers would get upset over a color change in a cup they'll eventually throw away, unless they had strong political beliefs or hated anything related to politics.
ReplyDeleteI think that just the green cups alone can't make that big of an impact on the whole country, but I think that it is making a nice statement that may resonate with many different people all over the country.
ReplyDeleteI don't think the green cups would help unite the country. Theyre simply coffee cups. If anything it would cause more conflict because would are so picky and judgement on how their cups look
ReplyDeleteThe green cups are a unique and creative way of bringing attention to the division that has uprisen within our country. Although it may not be effective, it only has good intentions and highlights importance of unity in such a time.
ReplyDeleteThese green cups didn't really make a big impact because people just see them as green cups and nothing more but the creatively was there
