The effect of people not voting

There is 324 million people living in the United States and only 60 million voted. This is because 103 million people can't vote because they are children or non citizens. Also 88 million just do not vote at all and 73 million did not vote in primaries. However out of the 60 million that voted,14% of the votes did not go for Clinton or Trump instead were for the other candidates. This left 9% of the votes for Clinton and Trump. As you can see there is a problem here because more then half of the nation is not voting and people are not giving them selves an opportunity to decide who will be their next president that will affecting  their daily lives. Its crucial that people start voting because their lives can be affected or could not improve if they do not start voting for the candidate they want. Only 9 percent of the nation is deciding on behave of the entire nation.

1)  What do you guys think about 9 percent of the nation voting?
2)How do you guys feel about who the 9 percent of the nation  votes for ? do you guys think they elected the right candidates?
3) Do you guys think that in the future more people will vote?

  1. It's not that 9% voted it's that 9% had the control to choose which canidates is the problem, we need more people to vote so that we can accurately gauge what the american people actually want

  2. 1. I think the voting percentages is a representation of how great the candidates are this year. Like people are so deep in contemplation about which candidate to choose that they have to not go to the polls and let those who are decisive to decide the political agenda.
    2. I believe that they elect the right candidates because those who make the effort to go to the polls and express their political ideas definitely means they are 100% certain about their choices. Then based on the way democracy flows the right candidate will emerge.
    3. I think that in the next elections when we don't have two great candidates than more people will vote because the choice will be easier to make.

  3. I think that it's pretty upsetting that only around 19% of the nation (60 million out of 324 million) voted as well as the fact that around 31% of citizens can't even vote at all (100 million out of 324 million). However, to say that the 9% voting for Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump would be deciding America's future wouldn't be completely correct, since a larger percentage of the people (14%) voted for other candidates. Although not as popular as Trump and Clinton, they all still have a chance.

  4. I think people who are able to vote should start voting because if not voters are just going to continue the mindset of "Oh, I don't need to vote everyone else will." IF everyone has that thought then nobody will vote. We didn't have to fight a war just to vote, no, our ancestors already did that for us. That is why we must take an opportunity to help our country and vote.

    1. I understand the viewpoint you are coming from. However I do belive that one has the right not to vote. With the current debates I feel as if it's the right of a person to not vote "neutral" with 53.6% on average voters I feel that it's enough to keep the goverment maintained and stable. I can't say if or if not more people will vote.

  6. Saying that people should vote is pretty pointless because it seems ridiculously clear that if you don't vote, you don't get a say in who runs the country. While it is important to encourage people to vote, it doesn't matter who they support if they didn't. The statistic includes children in the general population, and while they are there, children are still developing and it is outlandish to think that a 5 year old can decide their political view AND distinguish them from their parents.

  8. i personally think the amount of voters shows us how good the candidates are, and it doesn't look too good.I think the 9% might not be making a good choice in picking the candidates because it is a small amount of people voting. I hope more people vote in the future, because i do not want this country to fall into the wrong hands.

  10. I agree with Cem that the amount of people voting does show is how good the candidates are. A lot of people dislike both of the candidates so they decide to not vote for either of them. For example, one of my family member dislikes both of the candidates so he/she decided to not vote. However, I advised that family member to vote for the candidate that they hate the least, which is Hillary. This person really hates Donald Trump so I told them they should vote for Hillary to give Trump a less likely chance of winning.

  11. It is really hard to believe that only 9 percent of the population vote for the two people who could become president. Who ever becomes president will affect the entire nation. Who ever is elected will change a lot of ouur lives and effect all of us, so to see only 9 percent vote for two people is shocking that means the winner would not even need 5% of the nations votes to become president.

  13. I also agree that the percentages are representative of the views of the candidates this year as both nominees are not seen in a 100% positive light. Another percentage of people would have voted for candidates though, so the 9% is not entirely accurate. I agree with Matthew's statement that the right candidates were elected because the smaller numbers of people that did vote (in comparison to the whole country), would have reasons to justify their decisions and enough drive to actually vote. I hope more people will vote in the future because this would also have a broader representation of those in the U.S.

  14. Hopefully in the future more people will vote, but in this particular election I expect the voting to decrease. Many people are refusing to vote for neither Trump not Clinton. If everybody diverted their votes to a third party like the Libertarian group, Johnson will have a better chance at winning.

  15. I strongly agree that more people should vote because the next president definitely affects your daily lives. The nation needs to participate because 9% is a really low rate as a whole.

  16. I believe that as a citizen of the United States it is each person's job to vote. Each person has their own individual political opinion and are given a chance to voice that opinion through voting, especially in a presidential election. This election will affect each Americans life and because of that it is their job to express their opinion and contribute in the polls.

  17. It is everyone's duty, who is of legal age, to vote for who they believe should have the highest seat in our government. 9% is way too low and it reveals yet another problem in our society, no one is voting. Not only that, but the people that vote are basing their political opinions on their feelings rather than basing it on the ideals the political party candidate stands for. Unless there is more encouragement to vote there will not be more voters in politics.

  18. I think people who are able to vote should vote because it can affect future generations. Only 9% of people voting is way too low because people aren't really giving their opinion on who should be in the government. I think the percentage of people voting might decrease even more.

  19. I think that the only way we can insure a larger voting turnout is to make voting day a real holiday. Most people do not vote because they need to work. Everyone has an opinion on who they want to be president, but most people do not care enough to miss work in order to show that opinion.

  20. 9% of people voting just shows that Americans are beginning to care less about elections. Americans should vote if they can in order for the country to hold a fair election. The number of voters can only go lower unless something is done.

  21. I do not think that more people in the future will vote because there has always been a history of low voting rates. Unless there is a dramatic change resulting in people voting, there probably will always be a low voting rate. However, that is why it is so critical that young adults learn about government because then they can feel informed enough to vote in elections.

  23. The percentage of people voting is appalling.I think this is because majority of people do not believe in the process and do not believe that their vote counts. People are sick and tired of dirty politics and the candidates that we are supposed to vote for. People do not trust that the candidates are truthful and forth coming and therefore stand for the people. Unfortunately the choices are limited and non of them are any good.

  24. I think that the fact that there are only 9 people voting is kind of sad. It just shows that barely anybody cares about where the country is heading. In terms of the candidates, no, I don't think that they chose the right candidates. I think a lot of people are having a hard time deciding who to vote for. It's kind of hard to tell the future, but I think if we have a lot more years like this year less and less people are going to start voting.

  25. I agree with you I think people don't care about our country and thats why they are not voting and I think the people choose the wrong candidates and now people are even more unhappy.

  26. I think that sometimes people do not vote because although they can, they still feel like they do not have a say or any power. Some people have the mindset that their one vote is not going to matter or make a difference therefore they do not vote all together. Many people do care about what happens to their country, but by not voting it only shows that they do not. In addition to this, although it would be good for more people to vote in the future I do not think it is going to happen because many Americans do not see a point in voting.

  28. For this year's election, I feel that people aren't voting because the candidates are not good enough. Yes, I believe that it isn't a smart idea to not vote, but not all people support the candidates. It's possible for more people to vote in the future, depending on the candidates. Every vote means something for the future in America, so it should gain more attention.

  30. Seeing that this years election is against Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton I believe that a lot of people will not know who to choose from. The people that vote this year have the right to choose who they wanna vote for either they want Hillary or Trump, but the people that don't vote and care who they want as president should really get on it every vote counts and since it's gonna be a hard poll this year every vote is accounted for and can make a difference.

  31. I believe that as an American it is you're job to vote, it is you're duty to find someone who can voice you're opinions or what you believe in. Unfortunately in this years election the major presidential candidates both have their defects, and people have to take this election very seriously since this presidential election can affect everyone's lives.

  33. I believe that voting is a very important and the fact that only 9% is left for Clinton and Trump. Although I understand that people do not support the candidates, I believe that it is still important to vote for someone. This is because this years election will effect everyone in the country and the effects will be grand.
