A pipeline over 1,000 miles long is being built to transport Bakken oil from North Dakota to Chicago. Most of the pipeline has already been built, with the exception of a 20 mile segment near the Standing Rock Sioux reservation. For the past six months, protests of this section of the pipeline have been happening. The protests have garnered new attention in the past few weeks, especially with environmentalists, celebrities, war veterans, and more joining the Native Americans in protest.
The protests have proven successful. Construction of the pipeline has been called to a stop by federal officials who are now searching for alternative options. Those in protest have thanked the Obama administration for taking such steps to stop the construction of the pipeline, and they hope that Trump respects the decisions made. Already, the CEO of the company in charge of the pipeline has called to Trump to make the approval of the project a priority. Many are worried that this is just a temporary victory.
1) Do you personally believe that the pipeline should be built? Weigh the importance of this vital energy with the water safety in North Dakota.
2) Will Trump respect this decision or allow the pipeline to be built?
3) Is this really just a temporary victory for protestors?

I think the pipeline should be relocated so that it does not interfere with native land not made authorized for this construction. I think the pipeline will help create a lot of jobs and provide Chicago with its necessary resources. I think Trump would definitely want that pipeline to be built
ReplyDeleteI think Shanna has proven a point in the case that more job opportunities can be among the people. The only issue is the certain location in which the pipeline is created and hopefully Trump will fix it. This victory here by the protesters is the beggining of many
ReplyDeleteA majority of the pipeline has already been built, however, I think that protests should have started long before they even started building it. I don't believe the pipeline should be built through a Native American reservation, but instead I think that they should relocate it to get from North Dakota to Chicago another way and make it longer, if necessary, as long as they don't interfere with territory as important as reservations to Native Americans.
ReplyDeleteThe pipeline should be relocated because it's intruding on their land, and clearly through the protests it's not beneficial for them. Hopefully it's not a temporary victory because many feel strongly about this and have been protesting for a long time. I think Trump will allow the pipeline to be built somewhere else, I just hope it wont be in the native's land.
ReplyDeleteThe pipeline should not be built. Its current location is causing many issues, and I don't believe there are any better alternative locations. Transferring the resources used to build the oil pipeline to the production of renewable energy can help to create jobs.
ReplyDeleteI think that Trump will allow the company to build the pipeline regardless of the public's opinion. As a business owner himself. I believe he will side with the big company and help benefit them.
ReplyDeleteYea victory for the Native Americans! I personally am an environmentalist and I think we should not build this pipeline. Even though it would bring in more money and all that good stuff, we compromise the environment. No grizzly bears are dying on my watch. I also think that the Indians deserve the land because they always get bodied by the government starting from ya boi Andrew Jackson. Trump is a racist misogyny who will probably make a Carrier factory on this land.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Oscar that the pipeline is causing a lot of controversy and will displace a lot of Native Americans which is not ok either.
ReplyDeleteI believe that the respect to the reservation is of priority, despite all the complications that it brings. Even though reservation tactics and settlements were created years ago, that does not mean they should be ignored due to time. The pipeline, since it does bring essential labor, can be redrawn around the 20 mile stretch. I believe that Trump, if he respects prior U.S. treaties, will uphold the Natives demands to redirect the pipe.
ReplyDeleteI also agree with Oscar. I think that no matter where the pipeline is located, it'll still hurt one area or another.
ReplyDeleteI think that no matter where the pipeline is relocated or where it is built, then it will hurt an area and therefore should not be built. Especially on the reservation, I think it is better not to build it at all but realistically they should relocate this pipeline
ReplyDeleteI do not believe that it should be built because we have to preserve the very little beauty that we have in this world while can for as long as we can. He probably will not because he "cares about the people" not the environment. Yes it is just a temporary victory.
ReplyDeleteI think that the pipeline shouldn't be built because of the disruption it causes- a better option might be to shift efforts over to renewable energy research, and that itself could create more jobs that are needed.
ReplyDeleteI think that the pipeline should not be built and the area of the reservation should be respected.
ReplyDeleteThe bigger question is whether the pipeline will benefit our nation. Protesters will do anything to stop progress. Protecting the environment? How laughable. Look, Native Americans have been going against the will of the United States since the beginning. For example, they posed a major obstacle for the United States during westward expansion. The good soldiers of our country had no choice but to put them in their place. I believe that now they're just acting out of resentment, like what they always do.
ReplyDeleteI think the pipeline should not be built at all because this will pollute the water that the Native Americans use. Not only should we be respecting their rights but we should preserving our environment.
ReplyDeleteBecause of all these protesters, including celebrities, I think that even if this is a "temporary victory," more support will override if Trump allows the pipeline to be built. Media is a great way to get a certain opinion across, and in this case, more people will probably support the protesters.
ReplyDeleteThis is really a temporary victory for the protesters because the unfortunate reality is that like most decisions being made during the presidential transition period, this pipeline project has to be decided on by Obama, and if approved, then by Trump.
ReplyDeleteI don't think the pipeline should be built on the Standing Rock Reservation because they obviously don't want it there. The pipeline could leak and contaminate their land and local waterways.
ReplyDeleteI believe that the obama administration is in the right in halting the construction of the pipeline, but i fear that it is indeed a temporary victory, as it would seem that Trump will make an explicit point of dissolving any policy of the obama administration
ReplyDeleteI think the pipeline should be built, just not where they originally intended. I believe the country has already taken so much from the Native American population that it would have been ridiculous to do it from them again. The reason why I believe that it should be relocated anyway is because there are a lot of economic value that can come of the building like job opportunities and such. I think that Trump will respect this decision and move the pipeline elsewhere. I don't think that this is a temporary victory. I think that the government has realized how much this means to everybody and they will try to figure something else out.
ReplyDeleteI do not think this pipeline should be built at all because of the environmental concerns the pipeline will bring. Although the building has been halted, this is definitely a temporary victory to the Natives and I do not think it will be respected by Trump.
ReplyDeleteI do not think that the pipeline should be built, many of the native american land has already been taken from them and built on. I think they should at least reroute the pipeline.
ReplyDeleteI do not believe that the pipeline should be built. For centuries, people have taken the land away from the Native American's. If they want to build it so badly, they should find an alternate route and a place that doesn't affect peoples lives and families. I believe that Trump will not respect the people, because he doesn't have a lot of respect for anyone. I think there is a possibility that this is only a temporary victory for protesters. However, with veterans on their side, hopefully more American's will also step behind the cause.
ReplyDeleteI do not think that the pipeline should be built. Even if it is relocated somewhere else it will probably still cause issues with other people. If Trump wants the pipeline built he will have it built and will not respect the decision.
ReplyDeleteI think Trump would definitely want that pipeline to be built. This victory here by the protesters is the begining of many.
ReplyDeleteI think trump will want the pipe line because he is a man of industry and and bussiness. Since he has no regaurds for the enviornment,he won't think twice about his decision. Personally, no I do not think we should build the pipe because the company neglects to acknowledge their past mistake and oil spills. They are most likely not telling the truth about the "new, strong doble pipes"
ReplyDeleteI think that the pipeline does not have to be built, and the protestors fought fairly for what they believe in. There is definitely another way in which this can be solved without going through that land, it would just cost more money and take more time. Trump being Trump, would see no reason to resolve this issue, and just go ahead with it anyways.
ReplyDeleteIf many agree that the pipeline is bad thing then trump should understand and respect that decision. As Trump is, he doesnt respect others and is willing to do anything for unknowing to his own reasons why.
