The suspect in the Washington mall shooting on Friday, September 23rd has been charged with 5 counts of first-degree murder. Unfortunately, four women and one man lost their lives in the shooting that occurred inside Macy's of Burlington's Cascade Mall. Although more details about the suspect has been released, his motives remain unclear because authorities say it is too early to determine if this was an act of terrorism. After walking inside and opening fire with a rifle, he fled the mall, and 24 law enforcement agencies went on a manhunt throughout the state for the suspect. Authorities refused to comment on the type of weapon that was used or the state of mental health; however, they did say that this man was arrested for a simple assault earlier in the year.
What is your opinion on what we can do to avoid future shootings in public places?
Do you think repealing the second amendment would have an effect on the number of mass shootings? Why or why not?

I do believe that the 2nd amendment should be repealed because contextually, at the tim, it was necessary to have a militia and the right to defense due to the war that the colonies were facing. However, the 2nd amendment does not mold to our modern society that has no use for arms. The only people who should be bearing arms are those who are protecting us, the militia. I do not see any need for average citizens to have weapons that could escalate tensions drastically.
ReplyDeleteYes, repealing the Second Amendment would definitely have an impact on the number of public mass shootings. Ways to avoid these kinds of shootings would include new laws, such as Prop 63. Enforcing stricter laws on firearms would allow firearms easily accessible only to those in law enforcement and keep them out of the wrong hands.
ReplyDeleteI think we can reduce the amount of shootings by having more officers patrol the areas. Yes, I believe upholding the second amendment would drastically reduce the amount of mass shootings around America.
DeleteI believe that repealing the second Amendment would definitely have a greater impact. There would be less shootings and a better chance off not having people waving around guns and being shot at. If the amendments were to be changed guns would not be in the wrong hands.
ReplyDeleteI think that there should definitely be more restrictions on the ease with which a person is able to own a gun. Recent months have shown this without a doubt. I think that stricter gun laws would have a large impact on the number of shooting related incidents happening currently.
ReplyDeleteRepealing the 2nd Amendment will do as much as trying to stop bullying. It will do little to nothing. Yes people have the right to carry weapons depending on the laws of their state. However, criminals are not going to walk into a gun store and buy their weapons legally. Have some done that in the past? Yes of course. However, there are over a thousand ways to get a gun. You can make a gun at home, and that is less hassle than going in a store and signing a never ending stack of papers. Yes you can try and clarify what the actual meaning of the 2nd Amendment means, or just get rid of it entirely. All that will do is keep firearms out of law abiding citizens. What I believe should happen is we need stricter laws in place when it comes to firearms. There needs to be more enforcement when it comes to background checks, and there needs to be a mandatory three day waiting period for your firearm no matter what. However, criminals will forever be able to obtain guns whether you want to accept it or not is your choice.
ReplyDeleteI think that we should have more guards in front of public areas like the mall, just in front doors to just keep an eye out on if anything happens or something looks suspicious and well I think it would make a change on repealing the second amendment because it will not allow random people holding on to a firearm like I think their should be strict ruling on people allowing to have a firearm
ReplyDeleteI feel that repealing the second amendment, would drop down the mass shootings in the US, however I feel that this might increase the use of other types of weapons, and also I feel like this would anger many people.

ReplyDeleteI believe that we can stop future shootings with some gun restrictions, and regular check ups on people who own a gun. This will ensure that they are fit to own a gun. I believe that repealing will just make matters worse, guns are like alcohol to some people, this means that they are addictive and people will go to extreme measures to get them. Doing this will just make more illegal affairs in which people will try and either produce their own guns or try and buy them illegally.
ReplyDeleteI feel like security should be more strict at the mall. Also, repealing the second amendment would reduce shootings all over America.
ReplyDeleteI think that repealing the Second Amendment would make a difference. Putting restrictions on gun ownership and adding more gun control laws can help to prevent mass shootings like this.
ReplyDeleteAll right we need to stop shootings by preventing cyber bullying to dominate quiet depressed kids who's feeling suicidal. Needless to say perhaps gun restrictions will do this--Second Amendment can be revised to accommodate the needs per se(tm).
ReplyDeleteI think we really need more gun control to decrease the amount of shootings that are going on. It is ridiculous that innocent people are getting shot in public places. It makes people not feel safe and causes people to become scared to leave their houses. However, if someone is denied buying a gun, that person will definitely find a way to get their hands on one.
ReplyDeleterepealing the second amendment will decrease shootings but if someone really wants to do a shooting they will find a way
ReplyDeleteI think we need more regulation on gun control because there has been to many shootings in the US. With more gun control we are not taking away guns completely but making it safer so that guns will not be falling into the wrong hands.
ReplyDeleteRepealing the second amendment will not affect the mass shootings that go on because people will always find a way to get fire power.
ReplyDeleteRemoving the second amendment would only change the amount of accidents involving guns, however if someone is intending to kill people it is extremely easy to get illegal guns. In addition to this, if a mass shooter were to buy a gun from the government it would be better than buying it illegally, legal guns already have many limitations such as ammo capacity and types of guns deemed too lethal to be legal. If some one were to be forced to only get their guns from illegal sources they would be able to buy guns that would cause much more devastation. As sad as it is that 5 people died, if the shooter were not armed with a rifle, and instead with a machine gun that number would likely be in the.

DeleteI agree that repealing or changing the 2nd Amendment would help reduce the number of shootings. As stated earlier, the context of the Constitution was during a different time period where self defense was necessary during a period of war, and many people carried guns as members of the militia, but in a modern time period, this is unnecessary. Background checks on firearm purchases would also help this situation by keeping firearms out of the wrong hands and reducing the potential for mass shootings and attacks.
ReplyDeleteAvoiding future shootings, in reality, comes down to a combination of aspects. First, increased public space security could be one simple option to help spot and stop these events earlier. Also, forcing all gun stores and sellers to be federally licensed is another huge step to help formalize the gun system. But in terms of the second amendment right, if someone wants to repeal it altogether, they are blindly looking into what they see as a convenient solution to a complicated and important issue. Taking away the second amendment right will only harm those law abiding citizens like those in this comment section will grow up to be. Stripping your own right to protection will only make these shootings worse; there will always be a supply of illegal guns to those criminals and mental patients who wish to obtain them at any cost and prey on those who now legally cannot carry firearms. Before shouting out "end the second amendment," observe the other side of the gun debate and find out the lives these guns save in as complex a nation as the united states is. We are no Australia or England, where guns are not sold to citizens, and therefore our solution is not as simple.
ReplyDeleteI believe that a slight change to the second amendment would be necessary because it would have to come down to the control of guns and there sales. Yes and no repealing the second amendment would cause a change in the accessibility of guns, but it would not eliminate the people who go out and do the mass shootings.
ReplyDeletei think that we should have stricter regulations on gun control to avoid future shootings. I don't think repealing the second amendment will make a difference because all of the people who want to attack might already have their fire weapons.
ReplyDeleteI think we need stricter laws on gun control. I don't think think that repealing the second amendment will make a difference because people might still have their own fire weapons
ReplyDeleteI think that to prevent future shootings there's needs to be like airport security type of thing at the entrances making sure that people that enter don't have any guns or other kinds of weapon on them
ReplyDeleteI think things like this call for metal/gun detectors. Repealing the second amendment will not stop these kinds of things. It can't stop people from obtaining a gun illegally or off the black market. The government can't regulate EVERYTHING at all times and that's why I think this will always be a problem.
ReplyDeleteI think that instead of looking at gun control, America focus on mental health reform because it would benefit a larger population outside of shooting, limit the remarks of mental health associated with white shooters and not shooters of color, allow us to diagnose the true problems related to these shootings( if mental health isn't the problem), and limit shootings that are due to mental health. In addition to this, terrorists will get access to weapons either way. But I think that Lynn is pretty smart, so I think whatever she thinks.
ReplyDeleteI think amending the 2nd amendment would be in the best interest of the safety of the Americans, but doing so is extremely difficult. Making people give up their firearms or buying out Americans will either cost an extreme amount of money or cause enormous social issues.
ReplyDeleteI do believe that acts toward limiting the 2nd amendment should be taken in order to keep the public safe. Such limits should be stricter background checks. Specifically for the mall, no guns should be allowed in public places such as the mall or movie theaters. I also agree with Nick in that mental health should be considered a huge component to the threat of gun violence
ReplyDeleteWe need to limit the second amendment or else events like these will continue to happen. The safety of america depends limiting the amount of people that can receive guns. Background checks need to be implemented immediately in order to further prevent these types of events. Although this will be difficult to carry out with, it is essential to the safety of our country.
ReplyDeletethere's not to many things to avoid public shootings because if you think about it, a mass shooting can happen anywhere at anytime. You can increase security in big open places like a mall or a movie theatre but all you can really do is just always be prepared for the worst because you never know..
ReplyDeleteI do believe that America should increase security at public places to decrease public shootings, as well as to stop any terrorist attacks that happen.
ReplyDeletePeople that can own guns should be those who need one. Not everyone should have a gun only those who are trained and know how to use a gun correctly should have a gun. Anyone can make a gun with household parts I don't think we should tighten up the access to guns but limit the ease of having access to ammunition a gun without bullets is useless right.
ReplyDeleteShootings can happen anytime and anywhere. Putting up more security might think you can stop a shooting. But what if he had the gun already? What if he already started shooting? I don't think security can stop the bullet from hitting an innocent human being. You never know what can possibly happen, all you would have to do is prepare for the worst.
ReplyDeleteWe need to raise the amount of security that public spaces like this have. The more the security the less citizens will most likely get hurt. We can also stop shooters before anything happens if we have officers at the doors of malls. Repealing the second amendment will just make guns even more dangerous because people will alternatively go into illegal businesses to buy a fire arm.
ReplyDeleteI do not think repealing the 2nd amendment will cause less mass shootings because people who want to do harm and get a gun will find a way to get a gun, no matter what. I do, however, believe that it should be harder to get guns, meaning that there should be a background check, we should close the gun show loophole, and find other ways to make it slightly harder for a person to get a gun because right now it is too easy for some. Also, to avoid mass shootings, people should not be able to carry open fire arms without a permit on hand.
ReplyDeleteI think there should be more armed security in order to stop mass shootings. I don't think the second amendment will be repealed any time soon ,and if it were to happen, anyone crazy enough to shoot people would still find a way to harm people with or without a gun.
ReplyDeleteRepealing the second amendment won't do anything but create a riot in our country. However, we should do background checks on everyone before they purchase a weapon. Also, malls should have some type of weapon detector to help.
ReplyDeleteRepealing the second amendment wouldn't do much because people still carry illegally obtained weapons. Increasing security wont do much either unless they have some sort of device that detects weapons when they look suspicious, but we know that wont happen.
ReplyDeleteAmending the second amendment could be what's for the safety of Americans, but it will not be easy. Having people give up their firearms or forbidding them from purchasing any in the future will be costly and raise many social issues.
