Without conservative Supreme Court majority, voter-law challengers make gains

Since the death of Justice Antonin Scalia, Democratic lawyers and the Obama administration has been successful in overturning strict voting laws. Republicans in the Senate refuse to hold a hearing for Obama's court nominee, Merrick Garland, and this is causing the high-court to be deadlocked 4 to 4. Because of this the state courts and lower level federal judges decisions are being held. The Ohio Democratic Party is fighting for the reinstatements of the "Golden Week." This is a period of time in which people can register and vote at the same time. After eight years of Obama's nominations, state officials highlight the uprising of Democratic influence in the judiciary. For example, in North Carolina the three-judge panel that ruled the state's law that was intentionally discriminatory was solely composed of judges that were nominated to the court by Democratic presidents.

  2. I think the new representative that will serve America will have a lot of power because right now the Supreme curt is even with 4 Conservatives and 4 Liberal. Therefore, whoever is to become the next president decides the new member breaking the system.

  3. The article discusses how each state regulates their voting system, and there are issues that comes along with allowing voting to be at a state level. The article points out discrimination that is a side effect of requiring photo IDs. Through the requirement of photo IDs, some states can target white voters while overlooking minorities who do not have the ability to obtain legal documentations for a photo ID. This kind of set up only contaminates the voting system in which that the government should be for the people, and i believe that those who do legally live in the US should have the opportunity to vote, and photo ID is a supercilious way to block a right granted to citizens of the US. Sometimes, a circumstance will make a hard for a person to obtain photo ID, and we need to take those circumstances into account. Despite a liberal or conservative judge, the supreme court of the US should recognize that everyone should have the liberty to vote. Statistically, most of America already do not vote because of various issues; however, we can increase this participation if we can find a way to implement a better system that will guarantee an uniform and easier system.

  5. If a conservative judge is elected, the court's decisions will most likely resemble it's decisions with Scalia. Real change will happen if a liberal judge is elected. The president will make large ripples with his choice of judge, so this definitely makes this presidential election very important.

  7. Due to Obama not being able to nominate the next government official, the elected president will have a huge say in the decisions being made.

  8. I feel that with more conservative judges on the Supreme Court, more conservative ideas will be declared and may relate more to Republican goals. It would be similar if a liberal judge was picked because the court would lean more towards liberal ideas which most Democrats support. Overall, the president will be the one to decide this and the upcoming elections will inevitably lead to a big change in our government.

  10. I feel that if whatever judge we get to fill in the last role will have a large amount of influence on what happens in many cases and throughout the country. It's not something that should be done hastily unless as in this case there is many subjects that are being held back because of the lack of a ninth judge

  11. The choice of judge is definitely very important at this point in time because a dramatic change will come about if a very liberal individual is selected. I feel like the ideal situation would be to have someone that is not extremely conservative or liberal because it could bring more of a balance to the court, but I'm not sure that will happen at this point considering the struggle that is bound to ensue over who will have the majority power in the court.

  12. One of the most important stables that America builds upon is the idea of balance. The balance of power prevents any branch of the government from becoming a dictatorship, whereas the balance between the two major political parties prevents decisions that have the potential to benefit one party and weaken the other party, to be made. Standing in the middle allows an individual to see both viewpoints and reach the best decision. I believe that a thoughtful and careful president who wants what is good for the country would appoint a moderate judge to the Supreme Court.

  13. I think if the Supreme Court gets a liberal judge on the judicial system that there will be some supreme court cases that get brought up again. For example, an abortion lawsuit might go up against the supreme court because the democrats tend to be for women’s rights. If the Supreme court gets a conservative judge then not much will change in how the Supreme Court operates because the Supreme Court was slightly more conservative with Scalia; therefore, not much would change.

  14. I think that whoever is elected next into Supreme court will have a huge influence on a lot of the decisions made. Because the court is current 4 to 4 in terms of number of liberal and conservative judges, I think that whoever fills the last seat will sway the decisions one way or another. That is another reason why this election is so important because depending on who wins the presidential election will most likely determine which side will get the last seat in Supreme Court.

  15. The supreme court will be appointed the right judge after the votes; it would only be fair if the person is not strictly on one side of the spectrum. The decision will have a long lasting impact depending on who it is.
