As ID Laws Fall, Voters See New Barriers Rise

Image result for vote here signs

In states such as Wisconsin, Texas, and North Carolina there has been talk that they are creating their own regulations on how people must vote, such as bringing a state issued identification card and/or ones original birth certificate. Many of the election clerks are vocalizing that, “They’re changing things so quick that it’s hard for us to keep up,”. People are being told that they need their ID card in order to vote in hopes to stop voter fraud but the regulations are new and not publicized well enough for voters whom do not have their ID or original copy of birth certificate to get all the required documents ready in time to vote. Many have been discussing upon this issue and believe that these rules and regulations are being put in place to target minorities who want to vote but might not have all the documents set forth in order to request an ID or a birth certificate.

  • What should be required to bring to vote in the election process?
  • Should states or the federal government decide the rules when it comes to voting?
  • Should this be decided nationally or should this be taken on by the specific states themselves?
  • How could the voting process be made more fair?

    1. Voters should confirm their identity when they register to vote, and voters should only have to bring their voter registration confirmation as well as their I.D. when they go in to vote. The federal government should decide the rules when it comes to voting so it does not become harder or easier to vote in certain states.

    3. I don think that it is viable timewise to get people to show id at the polls because voting is already slow enough as it is and this added level of requirement will slow it down and may deter some people from voting.

    4. I think that voters should have some sort of identification when they vote. It is not hard to have an ID on you when going in to vote though because these regulations are new it may cause more people to not vote this year. I think that it is a good idea but should be announced earlier and that the federal government should decide the rules so that there is a common ground in all the states

    5. People should be required to prove their identity when they go to vote. I also think the federal government should decide the rules when it comes to voting so all states have the same rules and criteria.

    6. I also agree that voters should be required to have some form of identification in order to vote. States should be the ones to decide how people can vote, however, I don't believe they need things like original birth certificates, since they might be hard to access for some people. IDs are much more accessible, giving more people the opportunity to vote.

    7. Voters should be required to bring id to vote. The government is responsible for everything else that happens after votes come in.

    8. I believe that the voter should have to be required to show ID to vote, and if they are trying to register that day they should have all the papers already filled out or have an hour to fill out all the paperwork at the voting center. This should be decided nationally because it will make the voting process fairer and will not target certain states. The Federal Government should decide because it is an issue that can cause discrimination in certain states; therefore, the federal government should decide to keep it fair.

    9. Any new rules or regulations being made to the voting process should be set in place and advertised well so everyone is on the same page. An ID should be shown at the time of voting.

    10. Voter ID should not be required to vote because that is racist and ignorant. We need to have a little bit of faith in the hard working American people per se. Illegal immigrants without voter ID should be able to vote. Voter ID cost too much money and therefore it should not be required.

    11. I agree that this regulation may prevent voting. I think that people should have some sort of legal identification on them in order to vote; this would prevent fraud. The federal government should set the rule in order to create a nation-wide regulation, and this would prevent discrimination or the slowing of voting processes in particular states.

    12. I feel like voters should be required to show their ID before voting. The federal government should make the rules for voting rather than the states so that each state will have equal voting.

    15. I feel having some form of identification is good to reduce voter fraud. These issues should be taken up nationally because it will ensure fairness throughout the country by making sure everyone is subject to the same rules.

    16. I'm sorry but I have to completely disagree with everyone. Voter fraud really isn't a huge issue, but anti-voter fraud laws are. Voter fraud only has 2,000 alleged cases every election cycle. This seems like a lot, but percentage-wise it's not, and they're alleged cases of fraud, many of which are simply mistakes or results of paranoia. These laws make voting a LOT harder for minorities or people from lower income bracket who don't have IDs, or don't have the time and resources to hear about changes in the law. I think these laws are being passed as a way to prevent underrepresented groups from voting, and I think it's really twisted and back handed. The federal government should prevent states from passing voter fraud laws.

    17. I think that all people should just bring an ID and that is all they should need. I feel like the state it's self shouldn't be able to change the voting requirments

    19. What should be required for one to bring in for the election process is an identification card. The reason for this is so the people who are holding the election know that you are an American citizen and make sure that you are not trying cause trouble, and vote for something that does not need to be voted on. I believe that the states need to create the rules because the votes are counted by states, which means that state is responsible for creating the rules in the election. I think each state is independent which means that this should be decided by the states themselves.

    20. I think it should be decided federally because its better to have all 50 states following the same rules for voting.

    21. I think that voters should provide some type of identification when voting. This should be decided nationally because voting is something that every state does and it would not be fair for it to be easier to vote in one state than another.

    22. I think that there should be a nationwide rule on what everyone needs to bring in order to vote. I think it is ridiculous that every state has their own way to vote, just confusing everybody during the election time. I also think that these states should not change the voting process so close tot he voting date, as it will deter them from actually casting a vote.

    24. there should be strict regulations and everybody have to respect and follow since election is a very sensitive process and any cheating or mistakes counts .

    25. This would be better handled if this issue were taken into the hands of the state itself, for it will allow those who settle within that state to come to a decision they see best fit, for the states well being.

    26. I think voter ID cards should be kept in order to avoid voter fraud. I dont think the idea impedes on democracy but people who are careless and dont have their voter ID's will definitely lose their opportunity to participate.

    27. Voter ID will ultimately avoid voter fraud and voter fraud will only cause harm. I think that this should not be solely placed on the state, but as a nation as a whole. Stronger and more implemented rules will allow voting to be safer.

    28. I believe having Voter ID would eliminate voter fraud and is a good idea. However, I feel like the it is up to the state to decide what's right or wrong.

    29. I think having a voter ID would be a good idea so there would be no fraud. I also think that when it comes to decided what should be done, it should be left up to the state itself.

    30. Voters should be required to have some form of identification in order to vote. However, original birth certificates should not be required because they are not as accessible as IDs are. This would only limit people's opportunity to vote.
