GOP distances itself from Trump -- again
Donald Trump has been piling up controversies one after the other, such as his poor debate performance, his rudeness concerning beauty queen Ms. Universe Alicia Machado, his statement that military suicides are caused by people who can't take the pressure, and most notably the controversy over
whether he paid taxes. A New York Times report claimed that he may not have paid any taxes for 18 years, which has not been denied by the campaign. Contrastly, the campaign seems to be asserting that his tax evasion is an example of his talent as a businessman. When directly questioned about the assertions, Trump said that he had been a "big beneficiary of the unfairness of the tax laws". He claims that his actions in the asserted tax evasion showed his great knowledge of the tax laws and that this means that he is the one qualified to fix them. This controversy has thrown him back into the spotlight after his dismal performances as of late, and gives him a new angle to push. A number of famous republicans have come to his defense. Speaker of the house Paul Ryan claims "I think people who don't like him are going to continue disliking him." This is very possible, as Trump himself is trying to turn tax evasion into a positive, increasing his reputation among his supporters. This may very well make him gain supporters. Donald Trump may after all be a Teflon Candidate who simply is unaffected by criticism. If this sort of controversy had been revealed with Hillary Clinton the general public would be launching an assault on her credibility, led by Donald Trump.
1. Why do you think Trump is seemingly immune to controversies that would sink Clinton's campaign?
2. Does this indeed demonstrate that Trump has economic experience that would be applicable to the presidency?
3.Should Donald Trump receive federal punishment for tax evasion?

I do not think Trump is completely immune to controversies that would sink Clinton's campaign, but I definitely think that he has some unwavering supporters that would support him under any circumstances. This does not demonstrate that Trump has economic experience that would be applicable to the presidency. Losing almost a billion dollars to get out of taxes is absurd.
ReplyDeleteI think Trump is immune to those types of controversies simply because he does not have the political background to really sink it. I don't think Trump should get in trouble for not paying taxes because his very wise head found a loophole in federal law that states if a corporation loses a certain amount of money in a year, no taxes are needed.
ReplyDeleteYou bring up an interesting point, Patrick. In addition to what has been said, I also think Trump is seemingly immune to controversies because he's very confident in himself. He has an unwavering, high amount of self-esteem (much like his supporters), so he can take the stress and criticism. Because people see that he isn't a wimp, they admire him for his resilience and tenacity, very important traits for a president. (Not saying I would vote for him, just explaining what loyal supporters are thinking.)
ReplyDeleteI believe that Donald Trump is using a type of campaign strategy that produced surprisingly successful results. He makes himself very controversial at first, but then defeats those controversies with higher knowledge to show that he is a competent president. This can trick some people into believing that, but other people may just think that he's a hypocrite and vote for another candidate.
ReplyDeleteI also believe that Trump is completely immune to controversies seeing as there are many people who criticize his remarks and actions. Trump's economic experience doesn't have a positive record seeing as he went into bankruptcy numerous times, and I feel this does not mark positive qualities that the country seeks in a President. Trump does have a large amount of supporters that would not abandon their position due to these controversies, and I do not think he will receive federal punishment for evading taxes.
ReplyDeleteAnything Trump does can't hurt is image, it would just make him more popular. Much of her statements don't align with the Republican party so Im glad that the GOP is distancing him. Because he has the title as the Republican, he gains more support just for that. Its important people are aware that his stance is not exactly with the Republican party.
ReplyDeleteAlmost anything that Trump does or say does not hurt his image, and it just helps with his growth. Due to Trump being a republican he gains more support for just that. It is quintessential that people are aware that his stance is not exactly with the republican party.
ReplyDeleteTrump could do anything and it would only help his growth. At this point he has poisoned the minds of many people. Him being a republican automatically gives him a wide variety of support. However, people need to realize that his stance on many things are not close to the views that the republican party has. It's as if he labels himself as republican, but has some completely opposite ideas. He basically is taking a 180 from the republican party and making it so everything fits his own agenda.
ReplyDeletePlease take note that Trump's comment on veteran PTSD was taken out of context by the media. Also, despite the expansion of his empire, his numerous bankruptcy is a strong indicator of his financial capabilities.
ReplyDeleteI believe that he does not really get affected by his controversies because he is a Republican, meaning he gains a lot of support and defense. Also, his bankruptcy is definitely making it clear that he may not be well suited to handle the US's economic issues if he was president. His plan to deport 11 million immigrants would be very expensive as he would need to hire thousands of enforcement officers to carry out the job, ultimately costing the US more money which is something he has claimed to focus on not doing.
