On Monday, a hurricane reaching 140 mph winds is threatening to bring destruction to Haiti and the other islands surrounding it. It is continuing to move throughout the Caribbean Sea. This rainfall will continue to produce flash floods and mudslides. So far, 2 people have died from this hurricane in the past week and Haiti is continuing to rebuild from its natural disasters within the several years. The latest news states that Haiti and southwestern Dominican Republic can expect 15-20 inches with isolated downpours up to 40 inches. They have began to urge many of the residents who live there to leave Haiti as soon as possible. Hurricane Matthew is expecting to move north toward Cuba to make another landfall on Tuesday night. The winds will continue to exceed to 100 mph. The Jamaican officials have opened storm shelters, this is also the nations first major hurricane since 1988. Some Jamaicans believe that they can surpass this storm with putting their trust in power. This storm is expected to continue moving north towards Cuba.

Questions:
1. Should the US do anything to help this country?
2. What would you do if you were a resident in this situation?
3. How can we save more lives from getting lost?
I think the only real answer to these questions would just be to evacuate. Although there's nothing wrong with putting their trust into power, if I were them, I'd most likely choose to leave in order to save myself, my friends, and my family. The US can definitely take a part and help them in order to prevent more lives from being lost.
ReplyDeletethe US definitely should help, i just don't exactly know how to in a situation like this other than to help evacuate. If i was a resident i would just leave, not take my chances with the storm. The best way would be to evacuate people out of Haiti, and Jamaica.

DeleteYes, I believe organizations like Red Cross and others can send their support with relief packages and anything we have to give. If I was a resident, I would be scared and want to leave. I can save more lives by sending our support and giving them things to help them.
ReplyDeleteEvacuation is definitely the best option here in order to lower risk of losing more lives, and the US could at least pitch in some help with the process of getting people out as well as sending basic first aid for those who may already be injured.
ReplyDeleteThe U.S. has its own worries now with hurricane Matthew coming onto our coast now. Private corporations like Red Cross of doctors without borders can come in to assist with lessening a loss of life, but I would follow typical protocol with evacuation and expect the U.S. to send in non-governmental bases to aid.
ReplyDeleteI would agree that if the US wants to keep their reputation of helping people and be a helping hand then that would be smart.I would try my hardest to find shelter or evacuate. We can make shelters in those areas.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Nicole the US should help out this country with different organizations and donations. We can save more lives being lost by maybe creating a safe zone outside the country residents can evacuate to.
ReplyDeleteI would like to see the US help out these countries. I'm not sure what I'd do, but I'd probably try to evacuate with my family.
ReplyDeleteI think the US should help. We helped during the earthquake, so why not help now. If i were a resident in Haiti, I would not try to leave because it is pretty much too late. Instead, I would try to find the best shelter I can and hope for the best.
ReplyDeleteI think the United States should help. As Alyson said above, we helped them when they had that huge earthquake so we should help them now. If I was a resident there, I would try my best to survive and try to help other people. I would also try to find a safe shelter. We can save more lives by providing safe and dry shelters.
ReplyDeleteI do believe that the US should help in some way, maybe through helping with evacuation. If i was a resident i would not take my chances and just move. We can save more lives from getting lost by evacuating from the area, and to section off the area.
ReplyDeleteI think that the US government should not help out these countries, we have to stop trying to play big brother for the world. We need to focus more on the domestic problems that are happening on the home front then the problems other countries are having.
ReplyDeleteI believe that the US should help aid these countires and assist them in getting the resources that people need in order to stay protected from this storm.
ReplyDeleteI think the US should help to aid the country however possible. It would be helpful to send over any aid in forms of supplies or rescue teams. For the sake of humanity, it is in everybody's best interest to help those in times like these.
ReplyDeleteyes i think US should help Haiti to overcome this situation ,its really important to jump and help when we are able to do so .being humanitarian means a lot to this kind of crises .
ReplyDeleteI think that the US should definitely help those in Haiti with basic first aid and protection as well as aiding them in evacuating the affected areas. I think that this would be in everyone's best interest.
ReplyDeleteI think the US should help Haiti with trying to rebuild. If I was a resident, I would try to find a place for safety before the storm came.
ReplyDeleteI do think that the US should help Haiti because this country suffers from natural disasters and as soon as they recover from an old disaster, another new one hits them, so they definitely need any support that they can get. To prevent more lives from getting lost, we can encourage people to go to shelters and to stay indoors, and to also have emergency kits ready for them. It would also be good if the government was ready, and that emergency aid (firefighters, EMTs, and doctors) to be on call. If I was a resident in this situation, I would listen to what the government and other authority figures told me to do, and I would also try to prepare myself as best as I could.
ReplyDeleteThe US could offer their help by sending in a rescue team. However, the does not have to go and help because it has nothing to do with them unless the countries affected by the hurricane asks for their help. If I were a resident there, I would try my best to evacuate.
ReplyDeleteI think that US organizations can help them greatly by sending over relief packages and just helping out the people being affected, making sure they receive help and have a safe place to reside while they rebuild their damaged property. If I were a resident in this situation, I think that I would just try and find any possible way to get to an area that wouldn’t be as affected during the storm.
ReplyDeleteI think that we can help by starting fundraisers as usual, and sending over everything we get to the impacted countries. If I was in their position, I would also find a way to get out of the country as fast as possible and if not, I would try to find a place that is well built to stand up to the force of the hurricane and hide inside of it.
ReplyDeleteI believe the U.S. should help Haiti and be a helping hand. If I were a resident, I would try to evacuate but not quite sure how. One way to save lives when this occurs is to have safety shelters.
ReplyDeleteThe US isn't obligated to help anyone, it is a natural disaster, however they should help just to be nice people. If I were a resident in Haiti I would just take shelter with family, but I don't really think there is any way to save lives. Just hope and Pray
ReplyDeleteAlthough it is not our duty to help Haiti, I believe that we should. At this time of need, we have to help them in any way that we can. Though we might not be able to provide much help (due to the storm coming up to the US), we should give all of the support we can. We can hold donation drives or send Red Cross supplies to them to help rebuild. Anything that we can do, will help them.
ReplyDeleteI believe the US should help Haiti because one, its already a poor country to begin with and two they've already had other natural disasters in the past several years and they haven't been able to officially be and stay okay.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Daniela in that we need to help Haiti. They have gone through so much in the last two decades and I think all nations need to pull together to help them. I think my answer for one and two go hand in hand in that the best thing to do is to try to get as many people out as possible.
ReplyDeleteYes I think that the US should help Haiti because it will be doing a good thing for a country who is struggling and now after this hurricane it will be in complete destruction. Also if we do a good thing and help out Haiti in this situation, if whenever the US struggles at any point in time Haiti or even other countries might come to help us because they know that when another country was struggling we came to help. If I was a resident in this situation I would try to protect myself and my family as best as I could as well as try and help others if you see they are struggling or need help.
ReplyDeleteI think the US should help because Haiti is an underdeveloped country that needs help from other powerful countries, like the US. If I were a resident, I would try to find a safe place to live. To save more lives from getting lost, maybe I could volunteer my time to help those in need and those that are injured during the hurricane. I could also set up rescue teams to larger groups of people who are injured.
ReplyDeleteYes, we should of course send our help to Haiti. They have been through so much, and we are a powerful and privileged country with the capability to save many of their lives. If I was a resident in this situation I would probably do whatever I can to flee the country. We should send help, food, and provide shelter for them so that less lives are lost and keep our attention on the hurricane and it's negative impacts.
ReplyDeleteI'm concerned that Haiti's economy and population will suffer even more than expected due to the fact that the country was still recovering from the massive earthquake in 2010. So much money and resources went into the earthquake relief, and the proximity of these two events may cause some hesitation or difficulties for other nations to provide the materials and support that the Haitians need.
ReplyDeleteI believe that America should help in any way possible. The people don't have a strong source of fresh water and food, so they will need aid. Haiti already has a weak economy so it will be very helpful, and appreciative from their part, if they receive help.
ReplyDeleteI think that the Us should definitely do something to help them. Other than evacuating I do not think there is anything else they can do. To prevent more lives from being loss people need to work together to get people to safety and help anyone else in need
ReplyDeleteWe should send out help to Haiti and Jamaica. We should contribute by sending red crowd and evacuating as many as they can. If i were a resident i'd be freaking out and trying to leave immediately.
ReplyDeleteThe US is the most powerful country in the world so we are looked at for help when things aren't right. Therefore, we should aid them by providing any needs as possible. Truly, the only way to help this country is by evacuating their people until it is safe to come back.
ReplyDeleteWe need to raise money to provide shelters and food for all those in need. As a powerful nation, we have the power to change lives and help everyone that needs it. If I were a resident, I would leave immediately, but would possibly have trouble with finances and such. To save more lives, we need to create more reliable shelters for everyone in harms way.
ReplyDeleteI don't believe that it is the US government's job to pay for the recovery of an entire country however I do believe that we can help by starting an organization in the us to send groups of people there once the hurricane is over to help rebuild homes.
ReplyDeleteI don't think it is the US's responsibility to pay for the damages, however i do believe that countries should form an alliance and all should help aid them.
ReplyDeleteI do not believe that it is the US government's job to pay for the damages. However, giving money to the countries affected would be the right thing to do. I believe that US citizens that have the time and the money should also find time to help out with the damages. Raising money and actually going down to help rebuild their communities.
