Russia and Syria Pause Bombardment of Rebel-Held Parts of Aleppo

Article Link
On Tuesday in Aleppo, Syria Russia and Syrian warplanes halted their bombardment of rebel-held districts. An eight-hour pause in attacks has been promised by Russia for Thursday October 20th. They have done this as a good will to allow civilians and militants out of the city. However, this is not enough time for humanitarian agencies to provide aid for those wounded. Most medical workers,, residents, and activist do not trust the Russian offer. There is no word on whether groups would halt their mortar attacks that have killed hundreds and more recently several children. The United Nations officials said that they welcomed any reduction in violence especially in civilian areas. With these attacks there have been warning that Aleppo could become a site of mass killings like those that occurred in Rwanda.

1) Can we trust Russia to halt their bombings in Aleppo?
2) Should the US intervene in Aleppo to provide military or humanitarian aid?
3) What is the best way to stop rebel forces in Syria?

  1. We can only hope to trust Russia to halt their bombings in Aleppo because there is no way to tell. Russia's recent violence against children has shown though that they are not benevolent and could do much harm. I feel the US should try to provide as much humanitarian aid as possible.

  2. Russia can't be bossed around, we shouldn't spend money on another country when we cant afford our own, and we should all out destroy the rebels, issuing a warning to civilians and making it doomsday.

  3. Sending American relief parties into this active war zone is very risky, yet necessary. To fulfill the purpose of the cease-fire, it is up to UN countries to organize their forces and provide the much needed help to wounded civilians.

  4. It's the damn Russians! We can never trust Putin and all the 400 pound hackers in the world. The bombings will continue soon(tm) and that is bad because more destruction will cause more uncessary deaths. We need to stop rebel forces in Syria by having diplomatic relationships with the ISIS leaders. You see what we have to do is make ISIS members proud American citizens where they are accepted socially and as refugees. We need to make peace with them and hold summits to look cool. We need to forget about the past and all the beheading because that was so 2k15 and now we're in 2k16. Aleppo will fall--it's a distater--but we need peace per se tm.

  5. I believe that we should send UN troops in Aleppo and keep them there for humanitarian work even after the cease fire has ended. Unless Russia wants to wage a war against the UN, they would never risk bombing UN troops. We've got troops, and we're not sending them in because we're cowards. Cowards goof around and get outplayed.

  6. The only solution is to hope the Russians end their bombings. It is too risky to directly intervene against the Russians, as there is a threat to starting a war, even if it were to begin something like a second Cold War.

  7. The russians should end their bombings because they are destroying more of the city. I would not want to talk with the russians because I do not want a second cold war.

  9. The US should not intervene because the US already has too many things to worry about. All we can do is wait for Russia to stop. If it gets too much out of hand, only then should we intervene.

  10. Mike is right. I think we should just give a final warning. Russia is stubborn and their country has to much pride. Leveling their land would make a big statement.

  11. i dont think we can afford to spend money on another country when we cant even afford our own. I believe its up to the UN to organize force. The UN should also help out with the injured civilians.

  12. I don't think that the US should intervene military wise as it may make the situation far more worse than it already is. However, if the US were to provide some humanitarian help then I don't think it would be too concerning.

  13. In my opinion they are not trustworthy to stop bombing Syria.I also believe that the US should help Alleppo as much as they can without losing people in war and best way right now is to retreat people and get them away from the rebel forces

  14. I think that the pause in bombing should be taken with caution and things should not be done without thinking twice. I think if things get out of hand, we should intervene, but it should be avoided.

  15. if they have made a public claim to halt their bombing on syria, i trust the russian government to keep their word. the united states should not intervene, as this would just cause the situation to escalate unnecessarily

  17. we definitely should not trust Russia with anything as they have repetitively shown themselves as being hostile towards the west in general. I think the best way to provide relief to the Syrian people would be to allow more syrian refugees into the states on asylum.

  18. I do not think we should trust Russia to halt their bombings because of their record as being violent. The US should try to help the people and provide as much support as possible while still keeping our people safe.

  19. U.S. intervention into this situation in Aleppo is much more complicated than a simple, "hurry, send in aid!" The russians have proven they are not to be messed with when they set an agenda on a foreign country, something the U.S. has faltered in recent years with. Because of this, we can only hope the bombardments cease for the time being and allow non-nationalist groups such as doctors without boarders to come in and try to help as many people as they can. The U.S. must take to conferencing and diplomacy with Russia along with many other nations behind us to help curb Russian intervention without using force and possibly leading to millions across the globe being affected by such a new conflict.

  20. We can trust Russia in ceasing their fire for at-least 8 hours but that would not give aids enough time to respond. I believe we should aid them because we should always help a person in need. To destroy them.

  22. This reminds me of the proxy wars from the cold war I feel that there must be an agreement between the US and Russia to calm the deaths in Syria.

  23. Because Russia has publicly announced that they will halt I believe they will, if Russia broke their word then they would risk severely damaging forigin relations because they would gain a reputation of being untrustworthy

  24. I personally do not trust Russia to stop their bombings in Aleppo. I think US should because I'm pretty sure that the bombings include civilian casualties which need to be stopped. i think the best way would be to threaten to nuke them, so a fake threat pretty much.

  25. It is hard to know if Russia will stop their bombings, but it would be ideal if they would. This makes the trust factor of this situation to be difficult b/c it is unknown when/if they attack again.

  26. I don't think that it is necessary for the US to intervene in Aleppo. I feel like it would just cause more problems

  27. I think the US should send support. We pretty much spend lots of money on the military to subsidize the countries that don´t. Without the US to flex the military, Russia would bully most of the countries in Europe just like here, and China would have a lot more conflicts over the South China Sea. Even if we agree to no direct combat, the fighting needs to end.

  30. We should not trust that Russia will stop their bombings because of their violence in the past. The US should encourage people and provide as much support as possible while keeping our safety in mind.
