This article explains how an african american high school student has recently been attacked by 4 male white students who threw a rope around his neck and tightened it (for those who are not aware a noose is a loop with a running knot, tightening as the rope or wire is pulled and typically used to hang people). The same 4 boys who were accused of wrapping a noose around the african american boy’s neck also came to school a month prior parading around confederate flags. The family of the harassed boy was told to keep quiet about this incident due to the connections to law enforcement that the white boys had. No punishments have been given by the school either.
Do you think the victim’s family should file a police report against the white men?
Why do you think the school hasn’t punished these boys for their actions?
What should their punishment be if any?
I think the victim's family should have filed a police report because they hurt a person who was innocent of anything. I think the school hasn't punished them is because the boys families have a lot of influence from the law enforcement people in their families.
ReplyDeleteI think they should have filed a report. Their school probably has a broken system that just puts that stuff aside.
ReplyDeleteI think the African american boy should not file a police report because like you said the the boys who harassed the kid have connections with the law enforcement. The school hasn't punished the students for their actions because they probably don't care about it, school's anywhere in the south are still segregated and students are still racists.
ReplyDeleteYes, these 4 boys physically abused 1 other, by an means this is a punishable offense. The school, from the information given, has not punished the boys because they do not know of it. The punishment given, should be expulsion for threatening the life of another.
ReplyDeleteThe laws in Mississippi are different and I feel like they have different morals. The white boys should definitely receive some punishment from the school. It is not fair that they can harass anyone they wish only because they have connections with the police. They physically harassed some one based on race. I think the boy should speak up and his family should definitely support him throughout all of it.
ReplyDeleteI don't understand why the school wouldn't want to punish these boys. Sure, harmlessly flying Confederate flags proudly is one thing. But attempting to kill (or at least seriously attack) a person is unacceptable. I would like to believe that the nation is more progressive than that.
ReplyDeleteI don't understand why the school wouldn't want to punish these boys. Sure, harmlessly flying Confederate flags proudly is one thing. But attempting to kill (or at least seriously attack) a person is unacceptable. I would like to believe that the nation is more progressive than that.
ReplyDeleteI think that the family should file a police report, and the boys should be expelled from the school because their behavior is unacceptable.
ReplyDeleteI think that the victims family should have a filed a police report because the person was innocent who did nothing wrong. Someone who attempts a murder should be expelled no matter what.
ReplyDeleteClearly they should've filed a police report. This is totally wrong. The boys should be punished and should know that is not okay.
ReplyDeleteThey definitely should have filed a police report. Although the white boys may have had connections to law enforcement, those law enforcement officers made an oath to abide to the law and to not do shady things by protecting people that they know. This discrimination is in NO way acceptable and they deserve to be punished for demonstrating this kind of injustice. The school probably hasn't punished the boys because open racism is unfortunately generally more present in southern states like Mississippi.
ReplyDeleteI think the victims families should file a police report and should not let the boys connection prevent them from going to jail.I think the school has not punish the boy because the school is racist. I think the boys should go to jail.
ReplyDeleteI think the victims family should file a police report because what the four boys did was totally wrong. I don't think the school punished the boys because we are living with a corrupt system. We have people of higher authority who show racism within their students and shows discrimination. I think the punishment of the four boys should be that they get expelled from school for what they did.
ReplyDeleteFor obvious reasons, yes, they should file a report. However, filing a suit in Mississippi where racism is evidently obvious, it would be hard for the family to get appropriate justice. The state of Mississippi must take action because as a part of the whole, Mississippi is clearly not standing for what America believes in: equality. It would need to reform its education system most importantly.
ReplyDeleteYes this family should file a report. This school probably has a very broken punishment system. However, this is in Mississippi so we have to take in account how racism is down there. That is not an excuse in anyway, but it is probably why there wasn't much punishment.
ReplyDeleteThe family should file a report. I do agree with Geth that it would be hard for the family to get justice since racism still plays a huge role in their law enforcement, but the family still should come forward. It's possible that bullying and racism like this is occurring in other students' lives and can help bring awareness to their corrupt law enforcement
ReplyDeleteYes, the family definitely should have filed a police report. Like what Geth said, racism is still evident in Mississippi which is why nothing has been done to punish the boys at the school. The people in charge at school probably still think of blacks as inferior and don't think that anything needs to be done. The boys should be expelled from the school as their punishment
ReplyDeleteThis kind of occurrence is precisely why people argue that the united states is still racist. these people should not get a pass from criminal punishment because they are white, have money, or have ties to the police. the law is the law, and racism is racism. these boys should be tried as criminals, because this was a criminal act. assault and battery? thats a crime
ReplyDeleteI believe the victims family should file a report. No one has punished these boys because first of all their white and they threatened them. The white kids have connections to enforcement so that's why they told him to keep quiet. There is still racism going on all around the world but we should deal with it in a civil way. These four kids punishment should be expulsion for trying to murder someone.
ReplyDeleteI think in this community where this takes place is full of racist whites who have power over others. This case should be taken to the Supreme Court even with the alleged crimes the family has threatened against the victim. With this kind of racist action these 4 white students should see time in jail where they can be fixed.
ReplyDeleteThe family should file a report with the police. The boys are not in trouble because I believe it is there race that makes them have the right not to be punished. If they were to be punished I would say they should go to juvenile hall and get expelled from there district and their district.
ReplyDeleteWhat these boys did was no joke. They are a harm to the students at that school, and even people out on the street. I think that the family should go to the police about this, and not keep quiet at all. If anything, this should spread so people can see that there is a problem that needs to be addressed.
ReplyDeleteThe family definitely needs to file a lawsuit or report this immediately. This is horrible and not okay at all. The school hasn't punished these boys because they are probably racist themselves, or don't really know what to do with this issue. Their punishment should be them getting expelled because no school should keep students that are dangerous to the community.
ReplyDeleteThese four boys should not be allowed to get out of this issue. The family definitely needs to file a lawsuit. I believe that not only should they report it, but they need to make this story heard across the nation. The actions of these four boys was absolutely disgusting and awful and I believe that we need to raise awareness.
ReplyDeleteI definitely think that the family needs to file a police report around the white men. I do no think the school has punished the boys because Mississippi is not one of the most accepting states and have a lot of history of racist events.
ReplyDeleteI think that they should be arrested, for they could have killed this man if things went wrong.
I think that the boy who was harassed should file a report to attempt to get the justice he deserves. If the 4 white boys are given a punishment, they will show people that you can't get away with attacking someone and have no punishment.
ReplyDeleteI think that the family should file a report because it isn't ok that this boy gets off scott free when he harmed another boy
ReplyDeleteThis would definitely qualify as a hate crime. I think the victims parents should definitely file a police report; the kids are criminals after all and deserve a prison ssentence.
ReplyDeleteThe kids are criminals now and therefore the parents of the kids should file a report to send their kids jail.
ReplyDeleteThis is obviously not okay and should be punished with extreme measures. Hate crimes need to have more weight especially in the south. And if this isn't a hate crime I don't know what is.
ReplyDeleteI believe the school hasn't punished the students because of the area. There is still a lot of deep rooted hatred in the south for African Americans. I am not surprised that the school hasn't taken action, and I predict that they will not take action until forced to. We might even see them fight against the case if anything. I would go as far to say the school should be punished for not punishing the students.
ReplyDeleteThere should have been a report filed because racism is unacceptable now. Racism should have been long gone but people are persistent and just keep bringing it up. This is not okay and things need to change.
ReplyDeleteThis is a classic example of racism existing in America. In a progressive 21st century society we need to make sure that every feels included and safe in their safe spaces. School is a safe space from the real world hate and bigotry. We need to be super star seniors and practice some of that erracism thing--a play on words in order to win the game.
ReplyDeleteI think these white kids should go to jail or get put on beyond scared straight. This is not right at all and the family should file a police report even if the white boys have connections with the police. If I were the African American kid, I would rebel and whoop their ass.
ReplyDeleteI think the victims family should report it, although I don't know how much help it would be considering the victim is black and the boys where white. Sadly to say, in this society, the authority always takes white peoples side. If there was going to be a punishment, I'd say the boys should be expelled from that school and be punished by authority as well.
ReplyDeleteI believe that the victims family should get justice and report what happened and not leave it as it is because then that will just give more power to the white boys showing them that they can do whatever they please without getting caught or punished. I also believe that they should get expelled from that school and sent to jail to show them a lesson.
ReplyDeleteI think the victims family should get justice and get the awareness up. Racism is alive and well in 2016 and that needs to be known and changed.
ReplyDeleteThey definitely should have filed a police report. Although the white boys may have had connections to law enforcement, those law enforcement officers made an oath to abide to the law and to not do "shady" things by protecting people that they know. This discrimination is in no way acceptable and they deserve to be punished for demonstrating this kind of injustice.
